Whats the trick to ILS?

I had it working perfect at my usual runways but when i brought my 747 into some new airports it completely crashed me. I tried over and over and it either doesn't decend (doesn't turn off altitude hold like it should) or it comes up way short and crashes.

At Andrews I follow the tower directions and then drop gear, flaps 25, and 175 speed at 8 miles and it comes in like a dream. I pause the game at the last moments and turn off auto controls to flare & touch down on my own. Works every time.

At Tokyo Int. ILS drops altitude too fast and I crash before getting to the runway. I am at the altitude they tell me to be at when I connect to ILS so its not like I'm too low. In Hawaii, ILS turns to the right heading but it never decends causing it to over shoot the runway. The one time it did kick in it drops me like a rock a mile or two out!

If you are using the approach button on the auto pilot you have to rember this is not auto land. The approach buton is not meant to be a auto land tool it is what it is. APPROACH only. Once you have established yourself on the glide slope you are supposed to disengage the approach button and fly it in your self.
That is why you are having troubles FS2004 does not have a true autoland system.

TwoLow, your problems could be (probably are) the result of several small mistakes, all of which will come right with more practice. A few suggestions:-

The aeroplane not intercepting the glidepath is probably because you are flying the early part of the approach too fast, and getting too close to the airport too early. FS9 ATC seems to be 'tuned' to the 'normal'

In most cases, if you followed the ATC perfectly, it should get you to where you want to go no problem.  However, there are MANY times in which FS9's ATC is fallible, so you need your judgement in order to trust them.

One thing is for sure, check to make sure that you are not ABOVE the glide path.  In doing so, one, you will either miss it completely or two your autopilot will chase it in a sine wave pattern, very dangerous!  Interception of the glide slope should always be below, not above.

Another common mistake, which might be the cause of the problem is that you might have had your airplane configured for GPS navigation.  You must switch this to NAV mode before it will work.

Another tip is to make sure your plane is configured closed to your landing configuration.  Normally id have at least a few degrees of flaps and the gear down when I intercept the glide path.

Anyways, I hope this helps
Cheers,
RB
