WHAT DO YOU THINK OF VOICE RECOGNITION ATC?

Postby KNFLatc » Thu Jun 16, 2005 9:36 pm

Isn't it a little annoying to have to press the number of the option you want to say to ATC? Maybe it's already been done and i haven't found it yet, but wouldn't it be nice if voice recognition understood the phrase or specific parts of the phrase of the option that we wanted from ATC. It is deffinately something I would be willing to pay for, for the added realism. And by all means if someone knows where i could get this already, please, please tell me

Hi,
well there is voice buddy that you can properly "speak" with. But why spend all the money - just go the whole way and join VATSIM, or IVAO or Westcoast and have real people answer your requests. Live ATC is very rewarding.  8)

I'd love to see it if it's half way decent. Voice recognition programs I've messed with have left a lot to be desired. It takes hours and hours of training and even then half the time they misunderstand. Of course it wouldn't be quite so bad since ATC is menu driven. You could use code phrases so the VR program only needs to understand one or two words.

VATSIM and the other places are even better but VR ATC would be nice for all us poor folk still stuck on dialup.

There was one out there called SpeechBuddy,
(speechbuddy.zip), for FS2002, that gives you something like that.

You can define a speech library that will cause a user input to the sim.

Havent used it for a long time, dont know if its still there, or if it will work with FS2004, but worked reasonably well in 2002. More like instructing your co-pilot, that actually speaking to ATC yourself.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

I've been using Flight Assistant from http://www.thelindercompany.de/

I enter the commands I want to say and the keys I want pressed.

My biggest problem isn't with Flight Assistant, it is of course with FS's ATC.

When ATC gives me a traffic call I could respond with a 2, 3 or 4 just to say I have contact. Rather troubling.

For my part I agree with Saitek IVAO is the best if you want to talk with a realistic ATC  ;D

Then there are those like me who would probably get kicked ofdf the VatSim servers because I have very little idea of what to say and when to say it, and most I have heard take it too much like real life and want you to be perfect with everything instead of just enjoying yourself

Here's a quick notice about VOXATC.

Copied from the VOXATC FAQ...
Does VoxATC control MSFS  AI traffic?

No, VoxATC generates its own radio chatter based on its own AI aircraft (at the moment heard but not seen). You may still have AI traffic active in MSFS but VoxATC will not interact with it.

I actually haven't got into Vatsim or IVAO myself yet. I used ATC which was provided on a VA.

SaVas: I found the Vatsim controllers friendly and helpful- they go easy if they know you're new. Also, you should know basic ATC after playing FS. :d

From what they said here, I understood differently, that's all. I wasn't trying to dismiss your suggestion, just making sure KNFLatc knew what the difference was.

Wow, this topic kind of took off. and thanks everyone for their posts, MattNW hit it right on the head, i have played with MS' version of voice recognition and that just lead to saying the key you want pressed or a special word that you assigned for the key you want pressed. The proplem with all that is obviously the menu for ATC is never the same. So saying "cessna14b traffic in sight" might be option 2 or even 3 or 4. I have signed up with vatsim as well as ivao. This whole project I am doing is for my dad for fathers day. He is a new real pilot and I want him to be able to use MSFS as the real thing, and I want him to be comfortable while using it. (a bit safer and cheaper than learning everything real world). Im not sure if speach buddy can conquer what im trying to do or if it is the same as MS VR. Im going to look into VOXatc directly after writing this post, however it is correct that I want to be able to interact directly with MSFS' ATC
