DirectX Problem

Postby chief1995 » Fri Jun 03, 2005 5:19 pm

I need some geek help, I have lost my ATC voice and also engine sounds on some planes not all.  On both FS2002 and FS9.
When I do DiretX Diagnostic to test DirectSound, I get an error message saying Failure at Step 3 and finally that I dont have a driver and a sound card!
Yet I have sound on my computer I can hear CD music, radio etc.
Does DirectX have its on sound driver and or card? I have tried reinstalling DirectX but I keep getting same message.
Any ideas?

Thanks to all!

Check your sound card in Device Manager and see if you have an exclamation mark beside it. Even if you don't, click properties on your sound card and reinstall drivers and see if this clears it up.

It just sounds to me that there might be several issues going on for you chief.

1] Me thinks you are running integrated sound. This is fine for normal day to day stuff..............BUT.........when it comes to gaming, you really need to get a sound card.

**Some acft. come with very large and complex sound files. This could be why some acft.'s sounds are fine and others act up. The simpler and smaller the sound files are the better chance you have of NOT having any problems.

I just downloaded some EXCELLANT F-14 sound files. The file is huge for acft. sounds........over 14 MBs. If I didn't have a good sound card I would probably be getting problems like you are having.

2] You might have limited amount of RAM. If so, you are lacking here too and cause problems with Flight Sims when memory has to take some of the load for graphics and sound.

3] You may be also running integrated graphics which will only heap more work on CPU and RAM.

Posting your system specs. would really help when asking about problems with your machine.

From this we could tell you what you need to do, upgrades, possible solutions to your problems. Otherwise, I/we are only guessing.

Hi Chief,

Your problem may be corrupted Audio CODEC files in Windows. The solution is to uninstall then reinstall the CODECs from your Windows CD.

The CODECs are not a part of FS2002 or FS9.

If you're unsure of how to do this, visit the Knowledge Base at the Microsoft website. Search the KB for "Q177252". The title is "Flight Simulator: No Instructor, Pilot, or ATC Voices ...... ". Other symptoms include no engine sounds.

When this happened to me, all jet engine sounds were gone, but GA sounds seemed to work.

Let us know if this was helpful.

Hi Jerry,
What you are saying makes a lot of sense. I will go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and resaerch that.
Big problem though, my D---n computer came with everything preinstall, so I have no Windows CDs.
If I can find someone with the WinXP cd,  can I use that, or does it have to be the orginal source CD?

Thanks so much,

Chief

Chief,

You may be able to use a friend's XP CD - but I'm not sure. I remember reading some time ago that the CODECs were also available online at a geek website.

You might try Googling "Audio CODECs" and see if anything shows up. I don't know how you can tell if a website is legit, so be sure to scan for viruses if you find something that way.

Also, be careful if you install any new drivers. VAIO's use specific drivers I think (couldn't find any drivers for mine specifically other than on the sony support page) so ensure what you're installing will work with your laptop ;).

Right.but why don't you reinstall win xp from inside It will correct any anomaly from the kernel base...just more simply it will leave all your files intact
