Just wondering were to put this thread no sure, anyway I want to do a little panel editing but dont want to have to go into the sim to see it, what can I use to take a quick peek at the panel to see how it looks.

CFGEdit is the one I use. It's free but it can't display XML gauges. It WILL display a purple outline where the XML gauge is though.

Other panel editors are payware, but will display the XML gauges.

Choice is yours. Google CFGEdit it you think you might like it.

I do all my panel editing by trial and error....someday I am gonna break down and get FS Panel Studio....

In the meantime you could do worse than CfgEdit. Look on it as the free trial version of FS Panel Studio. The only thing it can't do is to read those XML gauges. If you're familiar with manually editing Panel.cfg that shouldn't be a problem.

Hagar is right, play with it a bit. In no time you will see that for a free panel editing program it is great, and the XML problem is easily worked around with a little practice.

I've always edited panels and aircraft files with WordPad.

This makes it a little easier...

If you hit the "Windows" key (next to the 'Alt' key) it will minimize FS9 and you can go about your editing without shutting the sim down. NOW the tricky part.. If you're editing a panel only, you can go to 'Select Aircraft' and just say OK to the plane you've got running and see your changes. If you're editing the aircraft.cfg file.. you need to load another plane and then quickly reload the one you're working on to see (fly) the changes.

It's not  as slick as these payware editing programs, but it works.

Despite its name CfgEdit is not a text editor but a proper panel design application with a WYSIWYG graphics interface. This makes panel editing a breeze & it's completely free. It's a small download that costs nothing so why not give it a try?

Ignore what it says about incompatbility. This only refers to those XML gauges. When you run the program go to Options/FS Mode & Root Directory. Select the FS2000 option & point it at the FS9 root directory.

Or pay the money and get FSPanel Studio, the payware version of CFGEdit...you can edit gauges, and it will show XML on the panel...

I was mainly just going to use it for positioning of guages rather than try retry try retry. I got the freeware one but havent played with it yet. Thanks for the info.

There's a short learning curve with cfg edit but keep at it.  I have had good luck with it but be careful where xml gauges are used. It has a habit of changing size values when you manipulate any other gauge.  My work around for this if it happens is that I just use cfgedit to plot the co-ordinates and size of the gauge I want to add and or move and then type it in on the panel.cfg.  A litte more involved that way but still better than guess work.  This method also works for adding xml guages because cfgedit will not recognize them in the gauge folder even though it outlines where they are if already installed in the panel.
