Infected!

Postby crocker » Fri Apr 29, 2005 11:36 am

Well it's happened, after 7 years of trouble free flying, I've been invaded by a virus (trojan) and what is more I believe it came with a texture download. Alternately it has copied the original EXE file (Steerman). The file was a whopping 16.7 mb and it was picked up when I selected the Stearman Black Crow from within the sim; quote Agent 12.AF; c\Recycled\DC15EXE unquote. Thankfully it's now tucked away in my virus vault but it has affected scenery but only certain areas and almost without exception in the US. Europe seems to be untouched. What I am seeing now in these affected areas is very large white or grey rectangles almost like the weird slabs which were in the movie 2001 Space Odessey (for those who remember it)
I really don't know where to start to sort this out as my scenery library is so complicated now having installed a very large number of files. I am more than a little reluctant to do a complete re-instal. The problem is not always confined to areas around airports but can crop up anywhere but not everywhere.
I just thought I'd share this with you but at the same time if any one has a solution please let me know.
As ever thanks. >:( :'( :(

about the only cure I know of is to uninstall and reinstall.
It is one way to put things back.
The other way is if you use windows XP you might try to use system restore and go back before you downloaded the file this may or may not work but it is worth a shot. 8)

Don't believe the Stearman is actually infected. I think your problem lies somewhere else crocker.

The issue of the Stearman being infected is discussed at length over at the SOH Furums.........Link below on thread.

http://www.cfcforums.com/showthread.php?t=17165

Seems that some Anit Virus programs are picking something up in the ClickTeam Installer due to recent updates on definitions in Anti Virus programs.

I see posts that more are using this acft. with no problems at all. I don't have it though as I try to limit the acft. I download.

Yes, some less than accurate Anti-virus programs are falsely claiming that the Stearman install has a virus.
This is where you problem originates.

I would stronly suggest you get a accurate, trouble free , low overhead, frequently updated

I've got the Stearman, and I'm not infected, so it's unlikely that's the case.  Unless the file was downloaded from a less than reputable source...it's quite possible someone could have infected it and uploaded it to somewhere, but it's unlikely with the major sites.
Great edit, Bob.

...mmm....heard this before but from my own experience with this aircraft there is no virus involved............look elswhere for your problem first before blaming this is my advice................commoner ;)

The Stearman was not infected!

It is a rather common "false positive" caused by Hueristiv scanning and the Clickteam installer.

An update of AVG several days ago corrected the issue...I was getting the same warnings, and they then stopped after the update 2 or 3 days ago.

The problem you have is probably a bad texture from within another recent download...that is a far more common problem.

I'm not the only one then......... I also run a commercial AV program along with AVG ....... both of them picked up the same "trojan" from the stearman zip. From what has been said here and been linked to about this "infection"...  AVG is as good as the commercial AV program and I'm glad I'm running both.  ;D ;D ;D

Better safe than sorry  ;)

I am running AVG 7.0 and didn't pick up a trojan from the Stearman either. I have a fake FS9 folder I install to and check it before copying to the real FS9 folder, just in case.

Thanks everyone for your valuable contributions.
I do run AVG and have found it to be quite excellent in the past at identifying potential problems.
The very last thing I wanted to do was to 'blame' or cast any disparaging remarks about the work which went into this aircraft. I have enjoyed flying it from the outset and it is one of the very few which comes even close to giving me a feeling of 'real' flying.
I cannot comprehend the hours of work which went into producing it as freeware and I would hate to think that my comments have in any way given the designer the impression that his work is not appreciated by me - nothing could be further from the truth. I was only flagging up the issue which my system had thrown up. Having looked at the thread which 'Fireman' identified on this subject it would appear that AVG has for some reason mis interpreted the file. Oh well you live and learn but I still think it's healthy to raise these issues because if nothing else it gives all of us a better understanding of some of the issues.
Thanks again and may 'freeware' live on!

Crocker, I also heard that if you get rid of the .zip/auto installer after install, you will stop getting the report of a virus detected. If it's in that auto installer and you want to keep the acft., then you can install it to a desktop folder. Delete the .zip/auto installer and then re-zip the new folder.

This is in case you can't update your AV or for some reason keep getting the infected reports.

Good Luck! Hope you can find the real problem of your graphics anomalies.

Just a thought:  Did anyone get this problem with the B-26 Hitchhiker?
