Well, a good frame rate is ANYTHING that gives you smooth flight.  ;D  Don't get caught up in the "How high can I get my frame rates to go" thing.

This has to be done in accordance to what you want. Perofrmance or Quality? A good mix is the best solution...and this can only be accomplished by you getting in there and experimenting with the settings in your Vid Card AND FS9 Display settings in game.

Other than possibly getting another 512 MBs of RAM, your system should be able to give you a nice flying experience.

There are tons of posts on this subject, so search a bit to get some ideas and then spend a day, two or three playing with your settings. IT takes time, but is well worth the time spent on it.

Good luck pilot.

I'd say the best way is just to play around with your settings and see how it effects your system. I am constantly changing my settings to get the right fps, for example i am always having to turn reflections on and off because in some aircraft i can get away with it, others i cant.

I think there are some essential settings that you need turned up though, like resolution and global terrain texture size. Its all really down to personal prefference though.

Generally speaking, anything above 15FPS looks smooth. I like to keep mine above 20 so that I have a room for variation. If you fly over open areas, its always higher than over populated places with lots of buildings and autogen.

Should I limit my FPS? I have it set on unlimited.

Anyone else have 256meg Gefore FX 5700LE that could suggest the best settings fot it?

Yes. Best suggested setting is around 20-25 fps. Anything more and you can't really see any difference and your computer tries to keep the FRs up while sacrificing other elements in the sim. You really don't need any more than this to see smooth movement.
