newbie question regarding flight dynamics

Postby Secondrule » Thu Apr 14, 2005 10:09 pm

Hello Everyone,

I have a question about the flight dynamics of  the default MS planes (ie Cessna 172, Caravan 208B, Caravan amphibian, etc) and a couple of  freeware planes I have downloaded (ie Real Air Cessna 172, an Aztec Nomad), and possible an issue with my joystick "twitching".

I am using a MS force feedback 2 joystick. When I am using the default planes, the MS Force feedback 2 stick will "twitch" every few seconds, making trimming and flying the default planes very frustration; where as, I don't seem to have this same issue when I am using the Real Air Cessna 172, or the Aztec Nomad plane. They seem to fly and trim very easily. No spiking/ twitching of the joystick, causing the plane to suddenly fly up and down.

I know the airfies are different, but, I guess my question is: Is anyone else having this issue with the default planes? Or maybe it's my joystick? I like using the default cessna caravan amphibian, but  I didn't realize how bad the twitching is until I started flying those two freeware planes.

I checked the calibration of the joystick, unplugging and re-plugging the joystick, etc. but the problem definately seems to be with the default planes (granted I mostly just fly the three defaults I listed ablove and the two freeware planes I mentioned above). I also have all  my reality sliders to the right.

Thanks,
    John

I've found the default FS9 Cessnas difficult to trim, but I wouldn't describe it as twitching, so I think you've got a different problem. I use a Saitek stick myself, so I can't offer much more help (haven't had that problem with my controller).
Maybe you could try experimenting with different elevator sensitivity settings.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply, Rottydaddy. Yes, it might be more of a problem than with just the defaults. I haven't had much time to experiment, but I will this weekend. I will see if it happens with the other defaults.

To clarify a bit more: there is definitely a "twitching" that occurs. The default planes will be flying ahead, trimmed, (no weather--no wind), and then the MS FF@ stick will "twitch"... then the twitch will end after a twitch or two, the plane will again for fly a few more seconds with no issues, then "twitch", "twitch"again, then fly ok for a few seconds more, etc.

Almost as if there was turbulance (I guess). But again, there is no wind.  Thanks for any help.

Don't have a FFB stick but haven't heard that one before in all the posts I have seen on those sticks.

One thing I can think of to try is setting the NULL zone on your stick just a little larger and see if this knocks the twitchy gremlins out.

Beyond that, you might see if MS has any newer drivers for the stick or an update.

Hello Everyone,

Hi, thanks for all the replys.

526th_Fireman, I increased the null area for the stick, and that seems to have done the trick!

I flew 3 different default planes tonight (Cessna Caravan, Baron 58, and the king air 350), and they all flew without any twitching!  I flew the default Beech king air 350 for a good 30 minutes without any issues.

Thanks,
   John

Great news!!

I remember hearing somewhere that those FFB sticks act different with every machine.

Was just making some logical guesses on my part. Glad one of them did the trick for you!!

Happy flying!!        ;D
