Is it possible in 747 to do a Sydney to Heathrow non stop?

No, I believe.
And the speedbrakes should be in the DOWN detent before take-off, or else you'll get loud take-off warnings  :)

They're not supposed to be armed?

Yup, that flight path will take you squarely over (or maybe just south of) Russia ;)

ChrisM, no, there is no commercial airliner in service that will do Sydney-London non-stop; the distance is 9,184 nms. The default 747 that you mention only has a range of about 7,000 nms.

Oddly enough, I just finished Heathrow-Sydney last night on FS (see above) using a Boeing 787, which has a range of 8,500 nms., and taking advantage of 'real weather' westerly winds. But the 787 won't be in airline service until 2007.

The 777-200LR (Long Range) just had its maiden flight, though, and that is expected to have a range of well over 10,000 nms. Boeing are already talking to Qantas about experimental direct London-Sydney flights. But even that aeroplane won't be able to fly direct the other way, from Sydney, because the prevailing winds would be against it.

A lot of people seem to count it as 'non-stop' if they don't leave the airport at the refuelling stop. Most of the flights refuel at Singapore.

Unless she got a lift in a B52? That would make it in one hop all right. :)

Well then, guess I was wrong anyway.  I remember doing Frankfurt to Tokyo and having quite a bit of fuel left, but I guess Australia is a lot further south than Japan.

Not very realistic in these days... but my favorite long hauler is the TU-114

What a beautiful airplane, elegant looking airplane! :)
