VOR stuff

Postby sonic » Sat Mar 12, 2005 7:05 pm

I finally passed my private piliot checkride and tyring to get the hang of VOR navigation as opposed to GPS but honestly It kicks my well you know.  I have went to http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htm and it helps but does anyone know any tips that can offer.

VOR navigation is indeed a hard to absorb in flight simulator at first (and probably in real life for that fact!  ;D)  Ive went from flight simulator 5.1... through fs2002... through various combat flight sims... and for some reason, it took me so many years before it hit me on the head on how easy the concept was (For some reason, i discovered it in Lock On: Modern Air Combat)

I like to think of VOR as this:
1) The VOR station is like a waypoint
2) by selecting a heading on your OBS knob (or your course knob), you select a radial... Kind of like a road..

I know step 2 is the hardest to understand, as I have trouble explaining it myself.  Say you want to fly a towards the station at a 270 degree course... select 270 on your indicator and imagine a big line drawn across the VOR station... Its kind of like a road to follow
3) Then you intercept the station at an angle... and once your indicator centers... fly heading 270 (just using the example from #2) and you will be heading towards the station.
4) To always means your flying towards... from flag always means your flying away from.
5) Always think about the VOR station in relationship to your aircraft... and always remember, the radial you select on your heading indicator is relative of the station!

to help you out, ive also searched out a VOR simulation so you can better grasp the concept of VOR navigation
http://www.relia.net/~george/aviation/sim/

Anyways, i hope i helped, forgive me of my poor explanation :)
Cheers,
RB

Depends on your problems. Anything in particular?
First thing pops into my head is that you can use VORs and even NDBs for some pretty precise VFR flying (IFR, too). I'm talking about interesctions, and not just the published ones. you can create the intersections you need, independent of the FS flight planner, and use them where you want to fly a good precise plan without an available landmark. This works well even without DME.
For example: Flying along a VOR radial, when you're, say, 90 degrees bearing from some nearby NDB, that's where you begin your descent. That sort of thing. And of course you can use intersecting radials from 2 different VORs, if your plane has 2 nav. radios.
If you use a real-life chart, you can even pinpoint your location (if lost or unsure)by the same method...

They both will work perfectly, until you open windows.

Ok first trip using VOR 2 questions though, I took off from KAVL went inbound to SUG VOR, turned onto the 185 radial to KGSP no problems but I noticed that the VOR heading was almost The excact same as the aircraft heading is that right.
Also When I planed the trip From kavl to kgsp it took me to the sug vor but when I planed the flight back it went to the ADB then on to asheville went smooth but why two diffrent ways.  From A-B one way and B-A another one why not just go the same way. Just want to know if there is any reason. Or am i reading too much into it. LOL.

Im assuming your using the flight plan in Flight Sim.

Well in real world there are of course different procedures for approaching airports once in controled airspace, trafic will leave in a different way to arival to avoid accidents.
Of course the FS flightplanner is pretty poor in my opinion. You could try FSNavigator, thats what I use.

Also try these tutorials http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htm

I am going to get fsnavigator as soon as I have some extra money. I have heard nothing but good things about it.
