Right quick simple question

on my old pc when I wanted real weather I had to turn off Norton??

no, i dont have to(im running xp) plus i think im right in thinkin that if you turn norton off then you're not protected from any baddies!!

If you want really accurate and detailed weather you might look into the Active Sky payware weather engine...I bought it the other day and the sim hasn't been the same! :-)

..isn't there an option somewhere in your antivirus which allows you to permit various programs of your choice to access the internet  ...surely there has to be....have a look ..commoner

Yes, there is an option. If you have the latest (2005) Norton Anti-Virus then on their control panel select Norton Internet Security, then Status & Settings, then Personal Firewall, Configure, then the Programs tab. Scroll through the list of your installed programs in there, find Microsoft Flight Simulator, next to it will be the current settings for Norton. Click on the program, the Modify button at the lower side of the window will activate, and then you can set your preferences.

I use the latest version of norton and have done nothing special and have no problems downloading real world weather. So I do not see why you need to set anything. The only thing I have set are open ports so I can use the multiplayer I use a wired router to connect to the internet with. I share a broadband connection with my son.

..mmm...your Norton stuff allows ANY application to access the internet and download without questioning it or asking your permission?...very interesting gary..commoner

I also run Norton, but when I'm flying I disable it.  I woudln't necessarily recommend it for EVERYONE, but if you're anal about keeping your PC safe, it shouldn't be a problem.

Had the same problem with Norton. Assuming your rules already set. I suggest erasing that rule and have FS9 force Norton to make up a new rule for it. But..
FS9 didn't seem to do that when i tried to dl the Jepp weather.

Then I was lucky to find this fix.  click on some topic in the learning center which looks for access to the internet.  Then that darn Norton finally kicks in and asks for a new FS9 internet access rule and then really changes the old screwed up setting.

Definitely keep Norton Firewall updated, and up and running as much as possible. Spyware and trojans have gone to an insane level this day in the internet age.

MS also has a beta spyware program they loafed off another of their "acquired" companies. www.microsoft.com  But it's probably going to be sold as another MS product after this summer.

Norton is set up to ask my permission if any .exe attempts to connect to the internet..it gives me the option to permit or block and there is a checkbox with the option to use the same answer every time ....soooo...when FS9 first came up, I clicked "permit" and then the "always permit this application" box........not been bothered since  then...commoner
