747-400

Postby Brown » Sun Jan 16, 2005 10:22 pm

When I get to 10,000ft how should I speed up , should I go to crusing speed , or to 300KIAS ?  Also what is a good crusing altitude for the 747-400 .  I have always wondered if it was 30,000ft or 33,000ft .

Thanks

I believe the proper climb speed for the 747 is somewhere between 300-310 KIAS, someone should clarify. No, you do not set crusing speed-the A/T would literally kill itself trying to attain it. Cruisng speed is generally not set until you have reached cruising altitude.  A good cruisng altitude for the 747 is generally in the range of 37,000 ft and up, the highest I've seen is 43,000 ft. Anyone know what the service ceiling is?

In the aircraft notes for FS2004, it stated that after 10,000 feet, you should climb at 340 knots until 25000 feet, then you should be going at 0.84 mach till cruise.  0.85 mach is  your typically cruise speed.  Im not 100% sure these numbers are correct to real world standards.

The service ceiling for the 747-400 is 45,100 feet.  Ive been in a lot of overseas flights on board 747s as my family is overseas, ive seen em go anywhere between 39,000 feet to 42,000 feet.
Cheers,
RB
