Continuous FS9 Problems

Postby RSA_SEAL » Mon Dec 27, 2004 11:39 pm

Hi all,

As noted in previous posts, I have experianced problems in FS9 two different ways.

First off, there continues to be a crackly sound only when in the cockpit - spot view of the airplane has perfect engine sound.  I have downloaded the latest driver for my speakers, which are Realtek AC97.  These have not fixed the crackly sound.  I have tried FS9 in "Safe Mode" but it makes no difference for the sound.

Second is the problem with FS9 closing down, sending an error report to Microsoft.  This problem occurs after opening the kneeboard, selecting the "Checklist", and by simply clicking the downarrow; it closes FS9.  Once again, running FS9 in "Safe Mode" doesn't prevent this crashing either.

I apologize for this new post restating previous posts, but I simply want to fix these problems as soon as possible, so I can eventually be on my way to earning my FS9 Student Pilot's License ;D.

Thanks,

Hi SEAL....Have you tried the "official" problem solver for your particular problem at Microsoft?.....commoner

Commoner, thanks for the website - very informative, helped out alot.  Through the instructions I managed to fix the crackly engine sound.  However, I am still facing the problem where I'll be in "Checklist", and then I click anywhere in the checklist screen, it closes Flight Simulator and does one of those "Send Error Reports".

Can anyone help me out with this specific problem?

Thanks for all your help so far commoner, it has been greatly appreciated.

I'm not positive about this but I think I remember people having this problem before and it was related to the video card drivers. You may want to update your video drivers and see if that doesn't help.

To commoner-

WHERE THE **** WERE YOU WHEN I POSTED?  ;D

Kidding, I can't be mad at you-actually I am just a little-but not a whole lot.  That solved my sound problems, if you had just said it a few days earlier I might have been flying and having a decent break... thanks for saving me the uninstall :)

Can't tell from the posts whether you have sorted your crashing problem yet or not!
Anyway, this might interest others who are having similar problems...
I have not been able to run a stable FS9 for some time now and think I have finally tracked the problem down.
I am using a NVidia GeForce 5200 graphics cards (128mb) and have had continuous crashes, both game and system, despite installing the most up-to-date drivers available.
However, none of the NVidia drivers are digitally signed and I was always warned as much when installing them.
After installing Service Pack 2 for XP and having yet another crash I had another look at the drivers for the card and suddenly (I guess from SP2) I had a microsoft driver for the GeForce 5200 as an alternative.
I switched to this an subsequently enjoyed the first full flight I have made in a long time!  No crashes (except my dodgy landing!).

Hope this is of interest.

Now I have found with the Geforce FX that many of the newer drivers cause both sound problems and crashes which is why I stopped updating them months ago.
In my experiance the 61.11 are the best most stable for the FX 5200 anything newer than that is trouble.
The 53.03 are also good. Signed or not!

So after reading all the threads about updating card drivers to the newest I find this is far from the truth.
Lower end cards such as the 5200 can't use the newest drivers and major problems are the result ;)
Most noticible is loss in performance and frame rates.

Also another common mistake when trying different drivers to find your "sweet" one is the fact that most don't really know how to correctly un-install the old drivers.
And I would guess that 9 times out of 10 is where the trouble starts ;)
Even though Nvidia states you can install on top of others this is WRONG! You must completlely remove all parts of the old drivers first! Driver Cleaner is a free program that will do that for you and highly recommended.
Once you uninstall your old drivers correctly you'll find that just about any Nvidia driver signed or not will work on your machine. But I can't stress the point enough to uninstall the old drvers completely!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys,

Sorry for the slow reply...Anyway, to fix the sound problem I went through "dxdiag" in run, clicked on the "sound" tab, slided my sound accerleration down to "none", and saved all the information.  Worked like a charm.

As for the Checklist problem, I went though "regedit" in run, found the "viewmgr.exe", deleted it, and all of my problems were solved.

Hey SEAL I would like to say thank you for the answer to the kneeboard problem. I did mine a bit different then you on the viewmgr.exe delete but it solved my problem. I did a search in all files and folders and found that there was a program with this exe command and I just removed it in my control panel. There is a lot of flyers out there that a greatful to you for this information thanks again.

I have PNY Verto Geforce MX400, "cheapo" card. After a lot of similar problems on this thread, I finally tried accessing some card settings under windows screen/monitor properties/ advanced tab/ 3D performance tabs. I set antialising to x - application controlled and ansitropy to application controlled instead of specific hardware settings 2x, 2x etc. Most of my problems disappeared! no crashing since then. Basically I assume the card lets the programs choose settings instead of presetting the card before 3d games like FS2004 run.

mmmm..is this a sneaky piece of Spyware then..apparently bundled with AOL amongst others....have a look here if you want to know more about it http://www.securemost.com/prs_lib/viewmgr_exe.htm  There are various ways to remove it as said but probably you might want to find out more for yourselves... ;)

WELL DONE RSA_SEAL for rooting it out. ;)

Mine is misbehaving again  :'(

Was flying fine until I tried a flight using an add on Dash 8 that has been working fine in the past.  This time - just as I descended through the clouds it crashed the game.
Took the advice of P.I. and used Driver Cleaner to clear out all my old NVidia drivers (sadly losing the Windows drivers aswell) and reinstalled 61.77 (the oldest I have).
Tried the flight again this morning and again - just dropped through the clouds and the game crashed.  Tried to load flight again and it crashed on the load screen.  Tried again and it crashed my system on the load screen.
Windows error reporting still tells me it is a device driver causing the problems but gives no more details.
I have tried everything suggested by Microsoft including removing half my RAM! (1GB down to 512MB).
Any Ideas?

I have just turned down my terrain mesh complexity and managed to find and delete Viewmgr.exe in my temporary internet files.

This time I got down to the runway before my whole system crashed!

Getting really angry now!
