FS just hangs

Postby Matt » Sun Dec 19, 2004 5:59 am

Ok some thing bizzare happend this morning. Went to start up FS2K4 and it just hung at the opening screen you get after clicking on the icon. So I uninstalled and reinstalled, checked all drivers were up to date, clicked on the icon only to find that it hung at the title screen again. Strange as it was working yeterday, I havn't downloaded anything, there are no viruses on my system.

Need help as Im going cold turkey here.....................

Try installing into a different directory? There's a chance there may be some residue left over from your previous installation that's causing the error.

I cleared it out completley. The fresh install had to create the FS9 folder. Its really bugging me.

Maybe CD 4 is not working properly? Just an idea.

I've always used the No CD crack. Even tried it with disc 4 after I reinstalled. Just upgraded to 9.1 to see if that would help. But its hasn't. As soon as FS opens it stops responding. I'm lost now as to what to try next.

...mmm getting desperate now :(   This small change to the FS9.cfg file misses out the select a flight stuff and goes straight to the default flight.....

Open fs9.cfg, and in the (startup) section change show_opening_screen=1 to show_opening_screen=0. Now, when you start the sim it will load the last saved flight that was set to default.

...well when you are drowning....any straw is worth a try..commoner ;)

This happended to me in fs2k2, and I solved it by deleting my last save game which I guess had been corrupted.  Try that?  While you're at it, why not just wipe all your saves just to make sure-apparently a corrupted savegame can cause fs not to load.  And no, I didn't have the corrupted savegame set as my default flight, it was just there in the myflts files.

...another thought Matt...could this be a permissions issue? Try right clicking on the FS2004 icon and click on Run As. ...maybe you aren't "allowed" to use it...commoner ;)

Did you make any changes beforehand...installed a program, etc.?

Just a guess...

If your using XP have you tried a system restore to a few days before you started having problems?

Just a thought..

Another thing to try is to boot up with only the essential applications running in the background and see if the sim will work then. Can't do "Safe Mode" because it leaves some drivers out that ACOF needs but you can start without many of the regular programs.

I recently had trouble with random crashes that could happen after ten minutes of starting a flight or two or more hours. I used msconfig.exe to shut down all my background programs and let the sim sit overnight. It was still running in the morning. Seems some program in the background is causing a problem. All I have to do now is restart them one by one and let the sim sit to find which one. Long tedious process but it sometimes finds what's causing the problems.

The FS9.cfg is here...C/Documents and settings/Owner/Application Data/Microsoft/FS9/ if you don't SEE it there it is a Hidden file and you can click the Tools tab and Folder options  then the View tab. Select  SHOW HIDDEN FILES and FOLDERS ....then you will be able to see it in the folder...commoner ;)

And technically just a note, we shouldn't need a Fs9.cfg file on the system to run FS since it can regenerate a new one for you..
