Using the GPS inbuilt or not??

Postby siron » Sat Dec 04, 2004 9:36 am

Guys,

Though I have been flying the FS for a few years, but seriously I don't know am I doing it right. OKay here's my question.

When I fly I always make use of the GPS that is built in to monitor when I should turn etc to align with the runway or to tell me if I am near my destination Airport.

I dunno if this is correct, talk abt real life in a 747 or even a A320, do they look at the GPS (map) to determine when to turn or to know are they reach their destination airport? Or??

Pls advise me...if I close the GPS, I think I'll never ever land the plane!!

Thank You

You pose an interesting dilemma: To GPS or not to GPS. There's no doubt the FS9 GPS (G295+G500) are handy instruments; especially, with the added TERRain (map) feature which is now ubiquitous on newer units(i.e., T1000)

As PIC, {Pilot in Command}, may i suggest the call is yours. On the other, if you're trying to stop using the GPS in this way, may i suggest GPS Anonymous . . . here you can share your experiences with others who are trying to give it up as well.

It's a moot point for those of us flying F-1's Meridian and ATR72-500 as they have realistic GNS units without  TERRain feature.

bill
p.s. that be: Garmin GNS530 and Honeywell's HT1000 GPS units, respectively.

Even before GPS the airliners had a map function since they had inertial navigation, so I don't think it's cheating if you use a map of some kind.
However if you want to have more challenge -then turn it off.
But todays pilots relies very much on the information displayed in the Nav display, even when performing visual approaches (!)  :)
The navigation display on modern airliners are a little different than the FS GPS unit  8)

Since FS9 is a Simulator for some and a game for others, it would depend on how you view FS9 how you use the GPS. Even Cessna are installing the Garmin 1000 glass panel as an expensive option in all their aircraft now. I'd love to fly a Skylane turbo with a glass panel take a look here's the URL
http://se.cessna.com/ Of course the cost of that option would require serious thought. How do you use the airplane? Do you fly x-country all the time or mainly local flying? Staying alert with hands on all the time on a 6 hour flight was never nice. Just ask an Airbus captain how he likes "fly-by-wire" My point is, that if you ever do that sort of flying, you'd better get some sim time in doing just that. There's a great tutorial here on how to do GPS approaches. Even if you just use a hand held GPS, FS9 is a great tool.  Have a great day :)

Yea, I fly a 172SP and they just outfitted all of them with these awesome garmins, dont know the model, probably the 1000s like logjam said... but my instructor refuses to teach me how to use them yet

My guess (and there are certainly people on this board more informed then I) is that the 747 or A320 pilots always fly IFR.  This would mean that (at least in FS9 and possibly real life) ATC gives them vectors to fly.  For runway alignment they'd fly the approach plate and turn on to final when they encounter the localizer.

But that's just what I'd assume from my FS9 experience and total lack of any seat time in a real aeroplane.

Yea, the big boys dont fly VFR.  They are definitely vectored by ATC.

*Gets up* Serious? Oh dear! I just cleared that 747 to a visual approach on runway 6!! Oh no, what have I done!

I like the FS2002 GPS.. You never know when youre flying over land or water at night.. I thought black and white was from the '30's lol..

Even if you clear him on a visual, the aircraft is still under IFR....many people confuse those things  :)
A visual approach CAN ONLY be assigned to  aircrafts flying an IFR flightplan 8)

Hmm I admit I use GPS alot I am trying to kinda give it up but it dosent make that bg of a difference to me, I can do VOR and I do often just to do something different and dead reckoning, well I tried that once and well I am still learning that and lets leave it there.... 8)

Really though, I can't see the fun in flying GPS.  There's nothing like floowing a radial and coming right out over an airport to make your day; especially if you are doing a trip with several legs.  Following a line on the screen just can't quite do it for you...
