engine heat shimmer effects

hi guys just for those of you who are unaware , on page3 in the miscellaneous section in simv downloads there is an excellent effect - nicks ai jet exhaust. I just finished applying this to the default jets and the effect is quite impressive , filling a big gap with no
ongoing visible jet effect by ms to simulating jet exhaust and heat shimmer. this is another classic example of someone putting a lot of effort in so simming becomes more enjoyable for all of us . give it a go!  :)

Yes, Nick's stuff is great. I have had that file for quite awhile now and really looks nice. There is also an update for that file also.

The Dynamic Turbo Smoke files are great also. The zip is titled SHOPX_FX.  It is available here too.

back again , just finished applying this effect to my entire fleet of jets, took awhile but well worth it. very similar to applying a smoke sysytem on an aircraft. reply if you have any hassles. :)

also been looking for that file in sim v shopx_fx but am unable to find it , any links? cheers  :o

hey tried to add nicks jet too but it seamed hard.. is it just me thats stupid or ??

but is there an easy way to do it ??

yes its a bit daunting at first, would have been great if there was an auto install program. but ill try to explain how to go. 1) take the example of the 747/400, firstly go to the 747 400 file in fs9 and backup your aircraft.cfg file eg just copy to another folder of your own , then go to the file in the nicks jet effect download called msaircraft.txt and open this, thenscroll down till you see aircraft configuration file edits for the 747 400, copy the entire lights section from here to the 747 400 aircraft.cfg file next to where you will see the original lights section then delete the original lights section.if you look closer youll see all he is doing here is adding four extra light specs which will call the effect files themselves and place them in the right place on the  aircraft.
2) next scroll down the msaircraft.txt file a little more and then copy the entire panel config edit section to the panel.cfg file in the panel folder in 747 fs9 etc right below where you see the last [vcockpit xx] section , if the last original [vcockpit xx] section is numbered 3 or greater  then just edit the new [vcockpit xx] to the next number on. ie if the last vcockpit is already 03 then edit yours to 04. what i believe nick is doing here is assigning an in flight cockpit throttle sensing system which calls an xml file to call the effect files themselves.
3) thats the hard stuff out of the way now we have two simple copy functions to do a) copy the folder called nngauges in the download with all its contents to the gauges folder in the main fs9 folder, then b) copy all the effects files themselves inside the effects folder from the download  to your main fs9 effects folder.

now if all goes well the 747 400 at over 8% throttle should exhibit the effect of shimmering haze and jet blast , much better than no effect. the AI 747 should have it too.

to apply this to other aircraft scroll down that msaircraft
file and repeat the procedure for the other 4 default aircraft.

to apply it to your own jets pick one of nicks two or four engine edits as appropriate and do everything as before but only copy the light effects section over  where you see the two or four effects called in the edit section nicks provided , then edit their light numbers to be the next in sequence from what is already there so if the last light in the aircraft your looking at is say 7 then number your copied lights to 8 and 9 etc max is 18

then tinker with positioning these effects by playing with the 3 axis setting parameters ie -3.00 . -18.00 . -3.5 relates to minus 3 feet back from the centre of aircraft datum towards the tail , minus 18 feet to the left of the aircraft , and 3.5 feet up from the centre of the aircraft. usually the general engine data section in the aircraft.cfg gives you a good place to start for the engine locations as far as the sim is concerned.

then save the config file and the aircraft must always be reset for the sim to reinitialize these new variables.

It is the Dynamic Turbo Smoke for FS2k2. I also use it in FS9 and it works fine.

I did see an FX installer somewhere for easily adding smoke, contrails etc. Just can't remember where I saw it or the name  of the file.  :-(
