In truth, I never found out everything about McMurdo. I went there as part of a 'foolish fancy' - flying round the world north-south instead of east-west. On such ventures I make it a 'rule' that all landings have to be successful, otherwise I have to start the whole trip again.
I got there at 2.00 p.m. - the nearest thing it gets to daylight at that time of year - after a long flight from Dunedin, NZ. The 'runway' ATC offered me looked to be just water, I thought it might be for seaplanes or amphibians. So I ignored ATC and landed on the most promising runway I could see.....and 'survived'.....
It IS a fascinating part of the world, though. I went on from there to 'Marsh' and got this screenshot of dawn pretty well over the South Pole - made it all worthwhile.
