Reboots to desktop

Postby SimBill » Wed Sep 22, 2004 12:47 pm

HI ya Gang, EX-Flybill here, I could not log in under my old username, anyhow, I installed fs2004 and WOW, what a big difference, I love it!!. The only problem is that when Im on a long flight, about 3/4 into the flight, my computer reboots to the desktop, I have a 2.8+ghz athlon, 512k 2700ddr ram, Nvida 64pbx8 card, running windows xp sp2. All my drivers on everything iis up to date. I'd shut down all running apps that I could before I started the sim. Also, I dwnlded some 2004 aircraft and zipped them into the aircraft folder, but some of my planes that I downloaded are not showing up in the list. Can anyone help me with my 2 issues? And can someone suggest a real good, step by step site on navigation? And good 2004 aircraft download site?  And last, Can anyone recommend a good freeware Aircraft installer program so I can install aircraft, textures..etc, program? OK, getting off my soapbox..LOL Thanks Bill, You can also email me at: PREACHBILL@AOL.COM

First of all Tell me that you did not unzip addon aircraft straight into FS. If you did this can lead to all kinds of headaches. ALWAYS down load into a seperate folder call it what you want I use HANGER for my folder. By unzipping straight into fs it can create multiple Gauge folders and multiple aircraft folders depending on how it was zipped up. I would suggest you take a look at your fs folder to see if you have any duplicate folders if you do I would suggest that you move the contents into the other folder.Than delete the other one. You have to be careful with the gauge folder as some downloads use a seperate folder within the gauge folder and they must stay there. My advice is to stay away from aircraft download managers it is not that hard to install them your self and believe me it saves a lot of hair if you know what I mean ;D
Someone has a good tutorial here at this site for how to install aircraft. It realy is not that hard
As to why some aircraft do not show up that could be several reasons.
One is the duplicate aircraft folder problem I am not sure what fs would do in that case it could cause it to crash.
Another is the plane is meant for AI and these are not flyable and therefore will not show up.
Another problem is in the aircraft cfg file it uses the wrong name for the .AIR file they have to match exactly.
You really have to be carfull when downloading into fs a bad aircraft folder can cause FS to crash without any messages as to why. All it takes is for a panel to not have a needed gauge and if you have two gauge folders I do not think fs will see them both.
But if you did download straight into fs and now have multiple folders do not fell bad. We all have to learn sometimes.
If you need any further help do not be afraid to ask. 8)

Have you noticed this probelm with anything else you run (other games as games will tax your hardware more than other applications...and not many as much as a flight simulator).

This sounds like either a power supply problem or perhaps a memory problem (as in bad RAM).

From what I have read while researching another problem, Jordon is correct in part on his analysis of a memory problem but, you are not alone and it most likely is not the hardware.  It seems that several people are having what is termed 'CTD errors' and it appears to be a memory leak (I can see Jordon shaking in his boots already) problem.  Suggest you head up to some of the other forums (like AVSIM) and search on the term 'CTD' or 'CTD errors' and be prepared for a bit of reading.  Most of the guys seem to be able to resolve their problems but there is still one 'fix' that everyone is waiting for and that is the upcoming M$ patch for FS9.  Many claim that the patch is the real answer.
