Did you uninstall before you re-installed? If not, first, delete the FS9.cfg. Conduct a search on your hard drive. It may be in a profile directory and that's a bit tricky to explain.

After you delete the FS9.cfg, run FS again. FS will rebuild the cfg file. If this doesn't work, then post your computer specifications as completely as you can. Include any add-on software you have installed, scenery, aircraft, airports etc. That way we have something more to go on.

Are you running it with disc 4 in the drive?
Are you able to fly at all using the "create a flight"?
Are you using copied CDs for your install?

ok now i am really scared. I did un-install before the re-install, but once the FS9.cfg was deleted the game no longer runs at all it just comes up the the splashscreen then black then the game closes.

My computer specs are; 1.6Ghz, 512MB ram, 60GB hard drive, windows XP and 3D 64MB SDRAM graphics card.

I had disc 4 in the drive, i could fly in create a flight and my CD's are the official microsoft ones. So now the game won't even open

You didn't mention a Video Card. Are you using onboard Video? Are all your drivers, motherboard, video, audio, DirectX etc. up to date?

Maybe there is a corupt WinXP file somewhere.

I did the systen restore as Taurus sugested, however the game does still not work. When i open the game, before the initial splashscreen my computer gives me a warning saying i do not have enough video memory to run the 3D hardware accelerator.

Try this
From Avsim Forum

In addition you have Autogen that is assigned in the terrain.cfg file, bridges, high-tension towers, highway signs, etc. and these can be disabled individually in the terrain.cfg. They can also be completely disabled by changing this line in your FS9.cfg under the GRAPHICS SECTION.

TERRAIN_USE_VECTOR_OBJECTS=0 0=off/1=on

Another type of Autogen is assigned by the default.xml file in the Autogen folder. This is where the fast food buildings and other types of new Autogen objects are added. The default.xml file can be edited to get rid of certain types of objects, you can also disable this type of Autogen on a texture by texture basis with the annotator tool included in the FS2K2 Autogen SDK. You can also disable all of these types of additional objects by renaming the default.xml to

default.xml.BAK."

Thankyou to all for your input, my problem is now solved after a well needed destructive system recovery was implemented.
