Rising sea levels!

Postby fellowtraveller » Tue Sep 21, 2004 10:42 am

I have just downloaded scenery mesh for the whole of the Eastern seaboard.  When I go to take off from an airport (specifically Kennedy) the sea level around the runways is well above the level of the runways themselves.  There are mountains of water which rise around Manhattan (without actually flooding the island.)  What have I done wrong? I've heard of global warming but this is ridiculous :)

I have notice a similar problem with the Toronto scenery with several buildings in the water...should I not use the 70m mesh with that?

I have the same problem with JFK.  I believe the coastline isn't in the right place and those (now accurately placed) mountains are falling in the water due to the poorly placed coastline.

Thanks Chris, that sounds like the sensible answer. At least it doesn't sound like i'm loading it incorrectly. :)

Sounds suspiciously like a scene from the new disaster movie
DAY AFTER TOMORROW,where downtown Manhattan gets clobbered by tidal waves as a result of global warming.
(Note to all frightened Manhattan Simv members: This is purely
fictional.Tidal waves don't really smash Manhattan.)

If it's just a matter of relocating (redrawing) the coastline it isn't half as difficult as it sounds. There are plenty of tools around to do that. If you read and follow the instructions, CoastLinemaker which is available here at SimV is an amazingly easy way of redrawing the coastline, roads, rivers etc to put them exactly where they should be.

However, it sounds as though it's more than that. The sea is at 0 feet (obviously) and I would have thought that JFK (and Manhattan for that matter) would have been placed at a level above that. If there are mountains of water rising above the runways at JFK and Mahattan there is another bigger problem coming into play by the sound of it.

Can you post some pics?

If you go to the freeware screenshots forum there is a tut at the top that will guide you through posting images in the forums.

Or click on 'upload images' on the top bar of the page and follow the instructions.

Cheers,
Dave

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

If you pull the plug on your monitor, you can see the swirl of the ocean as it goes down, just like the water in your bathtub.  :o

;D

Can't you just do a screen pic through the windshield - or even spot view might be better looking towards the problem
