Fschkin Inaccurate Weather!

Postby jordonj » Tue Sep 14, 2004 7:00 pm

Lately, even though there are few clouds in the sky, the Jeppesen real-world weather shows it foggy and overcast >:( :P really a bummer when I want to fly VFR...:(

Am I the only one who has noticed this?!

Is Jeppesen having problems with their server or something?

It is possible, i was hurricane chasing Ivan while it was at Greneda, i found the winds to be a bit weak, by this i mean i could fly a cessna 172 and it was hardly throwing me around at all.  Also the auto update screwed up for everyone in the game and refused to update for about 5 mins, it kept coming up with errors.

I was tryin to find hurricane Ivan too.  Max winds I could find were 56kts and this was only when you went up 3000foot.

I tried Ivan from Grenada, Cuba and Trinidad, I got basically the same low cloud and intermittent updates. However, the turbulence was pretty good and I noticed the ASI surging up and down. I guess we can't really expect Jeppeson or MS to be perfect in a Hurricane. I just feel sorry for all those people down there. :'(

Usually when the weather outside my window doesn't match what FS9 says the weather outside my window is I just re-load the weather.  Go to the weather menu and change the weather to "real world, updated every 15 minutes".  It's probably already set there.  Even if this is already the setting clicking through this screen will re-load the weather.  The second re-load is usually much more accurate.  If that doesn't work sometimes a third reload works.

My guess is that sometimes MSFS doesn't get to speak to jessepens or doesn't get all the data in the allotted time and just uses cached data.  Clicking through the screen again refreshes the data.

BTW, I've found that real-life hurricanes sometimes produce strange weather conditions in FS.  Usually there will be patches of sunny, windless, weatherless sky scattered around in the hurricane.  I attribute this to weather stations which have gone off line (maybe they're destroyed, maybe their communications are down) and reporting no weather.

ChrisF,

I have yet to find winds over 50k in the last year+ when trying to find bad weather via live update.  Hurricanes never seem to be bad at all.  Anywhere.

Have you had luck finding them?

All I ever get is solid wind and rain..... but not anywhere NEAR hurrican force ratings.

best,

...............john

My problem has more to do with FS2004 modeling an overcast IFR sky instead of a fair weather sky...

Good to know that I'm not the only one wondering what is going on...

ChrisF,

Thanks... good point about the stations possibly going off-line.

In looking at the screen shot above with the 99 mph wind.........

Guess the sea surface modeling leaves something to be desired too  ;).  Doesn't look like a storm tossed sea.

best,
