Runway Lights?

Postby squilky » Tue Aug 24, 2004 10:28 am

When I'm coming in for an approach, there are lights on the sides of the runway. I've never been able to figure out what they do. I assume they are used to help lineup the runway on a visual approach, but I can't figure them out. Should my goal be to have all red lights, all white, or a mixture of both?

ANy help is appreciated....

they tell u if u are on the glideslope... all white means u are too high all red means u are too low two red two white means u are on the correct glideslope. u need to correct your flight by them

They are called PAPI lights (Precision Approach Path Indicator) The above post is correct in how they are used. And they also have VASI lights which work in much the same manner but they are arranged differently than the PAPI lights  ;D

Thanks for the info makes a lot more sense now. I did the landing lessons and don't recall them mentioning the lights.

That is funny.... I thought it was "white ove white, your out of sight."  "Red over Red, your dead."  "red over white, your alright."  Not too much in variation, but funny how different instructors teach change the terms a bit.  Is this the same world wide? ;D
