Help Me please!!!!

Postby Pc-Shark » Wed Aug 11, 2004 2:59 am

I have downloaded a progamed called "AirEd" This program is intended as a editor to edit Air Files on any default or add on aircraft.

I am trying to edit the Air file on the Lear Jet 45 to make the aircraft go faster. I have already raised the value on the aircrafts max speed to Mach 2.0 and activated the auto land.

The aircraft can reach that speed but since I did it the auto pilot does not work right. What can I change in the Air file to make the auto pilot cooperate with the aircrafts faster speed?

Also I would like to know if there is anything else that I could alter in the Air File that would improve the Lear Jet in any way?

Thanks, Any sugestions will be great

As you've found, you can't always just change values will nilly in the air file. FDE design is more an art than a science as there are so many unknown variables and it can take weeks to get things right. I've got files that I've been working on for months on and off that I keep going back to.

I get people asking me the whole time to do tutes on FDE editing but it just ain't possible as it's something that comes in time with instinct and experience.

There are many interactions and it helps to have a basic knowledge of aerodynamics. For a start, in your case you'll have massively too much lift at the speeds you're flying at as the wing was not set up to do mach 2. You'd need to start there but that will be just for starters I'm sure because as soon as you change that you'll have problems at low speeds eg take off and landing.

I agree with Alrot, jucing up the .air file to make it easier to fly is not cool :-/

As the others said above - AirEd - or any editing of the 'air' file - is a thing even most experienced designers are in deep water with. Like Roger said - there are SO many variables & one thing will effect another ,  .. etc ...

If you want to play with the airfile the golden rule is to keep a copy of the original - so you can revert when - not if - you find your aircraft behaving like a garbage can lid in a storm  ;D

Hey; each to his own!

If Cybersurf wants to enter the wonderful world of modding; tinkering like he's doing is a good way to start.

Cybersurf: Each plane has 2 files working in conjunction to provide the flight dynamics: the .air file and the aircraft.cfg.
If you've never done this before; I strongly recommend you ignore the .air file (which contains the aircraft's base parameters and characteristics)  and concentrate on the .cfg; which among other things adjusts the .air file's parameters. It's also a LOT easier to work with.
If you want to make the Lear faster; you need to change a couple of things:
1) Under [Reference Speeds]; increase the 'Max Mach' and 'Max Indicated speed' to a point where the aircraft won't overstress with the faster speed you're about to give it.
2) Under [Jet Engine]; increase the value from 1.0 to something that'll give you the speed you want. Warning; you don't have to tweak it much; 1.5 would be a good starting point.
There are other fields to change as well; such as the flight tuning scalars; just remember to back up the file before you start; one wrong number can send everything south in a major hurry.
Good luck! :)

My two cents worth - If you're interested in a faster learjet you might want to try the Stratojet Excalibur.  At "normal" speeds it handles just like the learjet.  For example, it lands at about 140 kts and handles well in a pattern.  But if you want speed it'll do Mach 2.35 and reach FL550.

Try searching the download section for it.

When you get this "air file " thing figured out let me know.

I want to get my DC3 to be able to do Mach 2! ;D ;D

In all seriousness would that be possible? Just for Sh*ts and Giggles. To be able to modify a few lines in the files to make a 3 go that fast? or Have M$ actually made the defaults accurate enough to know that the plane was never designed for that so if it was done the Gooney would just tear apart?

Here's a DC3 flying manually and cruising at 300 kts IAS at 13000 ft

Took about 10 minutes to do - not perfect but not bad. Haven't tried landing but ROC after take off was excellent :)

Huge handful until I modded the control sensitivity as well. Quite confident it could be made to go faster.

I agree with GW.

The Excalibur Stratocruiser is one exciting piece of work!!  It's like a Learjet with F-18 engines.  It's lots of fun to climb up to FL 500 then kick in the afterburners--especially when you have the Military Effects Pack v1.2 by Toshikazu-Shimizu (Water-Toshi) installed.  The Sonic Boom is awesome!

I also like the default FS9 aircraft because of it has the best realizim. I do have add on aircraft but I mostly fly the default FS9 aircraft. I am just experimenting with the Lear Jet 45 just for fun. I only fly online and even if I do get the Lear Jet to do Mach 2.0 it would be no fun to go that fast if nobody else could cause I always fly with someone. Oh and I already did make a back up copy of the Air file and the Aircraft.CFG file.
