My solution is not for everyone, but it works for me 99% of the time
Delete the fs9.cfg and (after FS9 builds a new one) reset everything as it was before using the Settings Options
Bill
P.S. the whole process takes about four minutes

Check the event log by right-clicking My computer (in the start menu), select manage, and selecting Event Viewer in the left side of the management console.  3 choices will show...Select system for system error records.

Look for errors related to a CD-ROM device (Look for IDE 1 if the CD-ROM is on the second IDE channel.)

The symptoms sound like a CD-ROM problem.

I had the same thing happen to me when my CD-RW was dying...It was slaved to my DVD-RW.  My machine would lock and I would have to switch it off and turn it back on to restart it.  Often the Optical drive wouldn't show up at all at first.  Do you have this problem with other games (such as Far Cry?)

Anyway, the event viewer is where I'd look first...

Out of curiousity, did you ever find the problem?

i got the same problem when i play another games..~ after i updated all the hardware drivers from the web, it fixed and work well..

i suggest u to check update for both motherboard's and display card's driver from its manufacturer web site. because the motherboard's driver may also result so too..

I also recommend updating sound card drivers.  Most of my problems were sound card related.
