Usually the README.txt in the .zip files will tell you where to put the files. Most of the time, they just have to be in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft folder (assuming you use the default install location). Be sure that the proper folder is in that directory! Sometimes, you have to put some gauges in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Gauges folder.
If there's anything else you have to do, the README will tell you! For example, the Laincair Legacy with which I'm making my cross-country trip required me to put something in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\ folder to make it work.
When you're done, start Flight Simulator up and see if the plane is among the choices. If you can start a flight with it, you're all set!
Happy flying!!!
