Hi, and welcome to Simviation. Assuming that you want to use the computer you currently have without upgrading it, the best place to start is in the settings.  Turn everything in settings all the way down and see what your maximum FPS is.  Things will look crappy and if it is still unplayable, you may have to upgrade.  If it improves enough to be smooth, start by increasing each setting a little bit to see what your system can handle.  Autogen is a killer for lower systems, as well as the clouds, keep these at a minimum.  Set Anti- aliasing to 2x at the most. Adjust your settings till the point that you are happy.  If it doesnt look good enough to play, it is time for an upgrade or new computer.  Since you said you have an older computer, I am giving this advice on the assumption you dont want to make upgrades.  If you do, that is a whole other subject.  I am also assuming you have the latest drivers for your system.  Hope this helps, Todd

Another thing you might consider would be getting a hold of FS 2002 or even FS 2000 if you can find one of them.

They take much less power to run than FS 2004 and the actual airplane flying part is not really that much different from FS 2004.

With those kind of frame rates FS is going to be jumpy
Give us your system specs if you have a 3d card tell us what you have. Cavity hads made a good sugestion. Does your system meet the miniimum requirements.
The other question is did you do a full install.
If you did not do a full install then I would suggest you unistall FS2004 & reinstall fully. If you only did a partial install fs has to read the scenery off the cd as it goes & this will slow down fs to a crawl. 8)
