FS9 Won't Open

Postby PutPut » Wed Mar 17, 2004 4:03 pm

Hi All,  Hope this is the right forum.  I have had FS9 installed with no problems for at least 9 months.  Yesterday right after deleting the latest Netsky virus, it quit opening.  I tried every which way to open it and no go.  I decided to uninstall and reinstall.  Well, none of the uninstall gadgets would work so I wound up uninstalling file by file. I also deleted all references to FS9 in the registry  (XP Pro) and then reinstalled.  Now, the splash screen comes up and then it stops.  Task Manager says FS9 is not responding.  It also says my cpu usage is 100%.  When I end the task the usage drops to 1%.  I ran a complete virus scan (Mcafee) and found my system clean (it is updated).  All my other applications work (including CFS2 and FS2002) FSDS Paint Shop Pro etc.  I really don't know if this has anything to do with a virus or is just degradation of the OS registry.  I would appreciate any suggestions to try before I bite the bullet and clean the hard drive and reinstall everything (YUK).  Thanks--------Paul ???

Sounds like you may have missed an entry in the registry or the virus has damaged a something that ACOF needs to work properly.

I'd give Microsoft a call first before cleaning out my hard drive. It'll probably cost you $30 but I'd rather pay that than spend a week setting up my system all over again.

For $25 plus toll charges M$ told me to reboot and if that didn't work to reload everything!  That will be my last call to them.  Cheers--------Paul

Fixed!!  Thanks to Rino in the Avsim forum I deleted the FS9 .cfg file and let it rebuild a new one when I opened it.  Now I just have to rebuild FS9 instead of the whole kit and kaboodle.  Cheers--------Paul

Ouch! Didn't expect that. Usually I've had good help the times I've had to pay for Microsoft's advice. The advice is guaranteed so in this case you could legitimately claim that they didn't resolve your problem, especially since the fix came from someone on a forum and ask for a refund.

About the cpu usage saying 100%, that is crap Microsoft software.  A processor can not actually use 100% because it would not do anything, not even display anything on the screen.  When a processor goes over 90% usage that is critical and that means the processor starts processing itself which it will either get out of it or more likely continuely do it until the comp does nothing at all (including not showing anything on the screen).  I would not use the CPU usage meter Microsoft use because it is not right.  Just thought i would add this.  I am sure any highly technical computer user or systems engineer would confirm this info, or i would expect you could find it somewhere on the net.  I found this out from a Systems engineer that was telling me about CPUs.  It is an amazing fact that made me realise M$ talk a load of crap sometimes.

Mine has done that before.

If you are running Windows XP

Try the restore function to when you know it was working properly...

Maybe the MS cpu meter lets you know the cpu has reached it's limit of of usable resources.  Do I care?, no!

Just means I better start cuttin back somewhere, or locate the problem.... ;)

Cheers,
Dave

How do you know a cpu cant go 100% if it cant tell you?????
At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

If it did go 100% it would be doing nothing but processing itself, you would not see a thing on the screen.

On critical systems they have computers measuring the computers that is why they know when the processor is at 100% it does nothing but process itself.
