is there anyway to rename a default fs2002 airport. for example cyul dorval international to pierre elliot trudeau international. so that the new name would be used in the go to airport list, map view, atc etc... if it is possible is there a way of doing it so that project ai flights dont get lost looking for the old airport name.

AFAIK PAI looks for the code, not the long name (would use too much memory if doing that)

Try this, open the airport in AFCAD, right click and choose properties.
At the bottom is a text field for airport name.
Try renaming it and see if ATC calls the change.
If there is an airshow with in 2 states of me I'm there
