Reversing the direction of traffic

Postby Hernan2 » Wed Apr 30, 2003 3:33 am

Hi
I just got AFCAD and I think I am getting addicted to it.  I was just trying to add more new things into El Alto International Airport, in La Paz, Bolivia (SLLP). The traffic is very interesting at this airport. The default traffic is set up to use runway 10. Its good for landings, but because this is a high altitude airport, the runway is quite long (13,000+ft). Flight Sim has it defaulted to use runway 10 for takeoffs as well. However, in real life, the departing traffic uses runway 28 most of the time because the terminal is closer to the departure end of runway 28. Unfortunately, as far as I remember there was no taxiway parallel to the runway if you were to use runway 10 for departure, you would have to use the runway to taxi, and the AI traffic does that, however, to make it more realistic I changed the departure to use runway 28 with AFCAD, I went to "Insert" and "Start Location". I saw AI traffic being directed by ATC to runway 28, however, all other AI traffic was using runway 10 for arrivals, creating many "Go Arounds". I tried to add a Glide Slope to correct this, and now I lost my runway 28 for departures, it defaulted back to runway 10. How do I change it to make all traffic use runway 10, permanently?.
Thanks,
Hernan :)

Yes, I've been addicted to AFCAD for quite a while!

I understand what you are trying to do at La Paz, but unfortunately I don't think it can be done using AFCAD.  You can either close a runway at both ends for takeoffs or for landings, but you can't manipulate traffic to take off in one direction and land in the opposite direction on the same runway.  More bad news is that creating an overlay won't solve the problem, either.

You can, however, use AFCAD to draw a taxiway to the west end of the runway with occasional links to the runway along the way so that traffic doesn't spend excessive time taxiing up and down the runway.  If you do this, make sure you include hold short nodes (red dots) on all links to the runway.

And, if you want to take things a step further, Derek Leung's FS Scenery Creator is a good program for adding scenery, such as taxiways.  Adding airport features in AFCAD will not result in any changes to the visual scenery displayed in the game.

Good luck!
