F/A 18?

Postby Politically Incorrect » Sat Sep 04, 2004 4:10 am

Anywhere I could get a good F/A 18?
I have tried a few models for the C & Super Hornet made by the same designer but am unsure of the flight dynamics.
The thing stalls at 400knts?
I mean I watched the Blue Angels do things with this plane that if the flight dynamics of the model are even close can't be done??
I'll be doing close to Mach 1 and attempt a turn and the plane will stall (and not a extreme turn either)
What am I doing wrong if anything?
Also I favor the Super Hornet model but is there a clean version?(one without tanks)
I don't care much for 55 different variations of a aircraft in one download, doesn't make much sense ::)

oops! sorry wrong forum! :-[

Finally, someone who actually agrees with me on here! lol

Well, I've been waiting since, well... mid June for Aerialfoundry to release their Hornet(s), which looks to be AMAZING.  (It is payware though)  They first said the aircraft would be available by "the end of June" and well, it's September now, they said it'd be ready last week... anyway, the airplane at least LOOKS to be worth the wait... check it out at www.aerialfoundry.ca  If the past is any indicator of the future, expect this aircraft to be available in winter '09. lol

Anyway, I have an older CF-18, (Cougar 20th Anniversary) that seems to be the most realistic... doesn't stall, but you can easily pull +10 g's.. roll and everything is pretty nice.  Again, nothing real close to realism in the dynamics, but about a million times better than the newer ones.

Just to be fair to the designer  Daisuke Yamamoto who admits to buiding the model without ever seeing one. It is a good looking model! And it is also setup for carrier landings and such.
I don't know squat about aircraft designing so it would be my quess that these models aren't meant to be flown like the BA's .
The BAs' have very few modifcations done to them but they are modified to fly the way they do anyway.
Don't know if this explains it or not but got me thinking, maybe a designer could give some input on this?

Yes, that's very true, the airplanes he made look AMAZING.  And they do fly well, if you only use your joystick (and throttle for that matter) to about 1/2 of its limits.

And yeah, that's true, MS sims aren't really made for turning and burning in a fighter... ya have to get a game like LOMAC for that.  (And BTW the Hornet mod you can get for that game ROCKS!  It flys exactally like you'd expect the real thing to fly.)  And just FYI, the Blue Angels only have slight modifications, such as flying with full nose down trim (not really a mod) and all fly with the rudder pedals close in, and a can thing in the nose (where the gun would be) for the smoke system.  The rest is pretty much just the pure awesomeness of the Hornet. :D

I checked out the model that you posted the link for and it does look sweet! And I will probably be getting it when released.
FYI- A Blue Angel can be combat ready in less that 72 hours, so yes very few modifications.
But they are AWESOME!! Did you check out the amazing shots that SaVas got?!

Yeah, that's pretty sweet.  I always liked seeing the show "behind the scenes."  That's where you see the real max performance of the jets, when they try to rejoin and form up with each other.  The F/A-18 in general is an increadible aircraft, and even after all the hours spent watching that aircraft, it never ceases to amaze me! lol  At an airshow a couple years ago I got a GREAT shot of the West Coast hornet team taking off, and right when the guy reaches the end of the runway, rolls the aircraft 90 degrees, and does a 90 degree turn, rolls level, and begins to pitch up all within like 2 seconds... the most amazing thing I've ever seen!  That's the kind of stuff you see the diamond pilots doing to rejoin, they just swap ends with that jet like it's nothin'! lol

And yeah, SaVas has some great shots!  BTW, did you see my shots from a few weekends ago I posted?  For some reason every post I make seems to go un-noticed around here... maybe I just need to make myself known a bit more... anyway, here's the link to that post... http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=photos;action=display;num=1093488824;start=0

I don't think it is that your post go un-noticed, it is just certain days that you post many others post photos also and that will bump you back in a hurry.
My shots from the Lost Squadron show last weekend were bumped in a hurry but I posted on a Sunday which is a popular day for people to show off what they did on Saturday ;)
Another busy post day is Monday. Seems that the middle of the week is best time for your post to get "front page" air time ;D

Maybe your emails are interupting thier progress? ;D
I have also been waiting but did find one that flies pretty good but is easy to overstress but doesn't stall like the other.
Funny thing is it is the McDonnell-Douglas/Boeing CF-18/A Hornet(2002) , made by none other than Aerialfoundry.

lol they're the ones that made it?  That one is my favorite Hornet model too... if ya turn off "stress causes damage" and fly it using about 3/4 throttle as max and watch your G's and only go up to 7-8, it flys BEAUTIFULLY.

Anyway I CANNOT wait for this airplane to come out!  Wohoo!  Untill then, I may get the aerosoft A-10... hummm..looks fun!
