FS9 is not very good when it comes to spacecraft. The hard ceiling means that you can't leave the atmosphere.

I would reccomend that you download Orbiter. It is a free, stand alone space simulator.

he could use it as a 'lander' and slew it up to where he wants to start out (40K feet or so) and then glide it back to the runway he intends to land at.
