Attaching effects to .mdl files in gmax

Is there a step-by-step tutorial on how to attach effects to a 3D model in gmax?

Do you mean like smoke?  That's done in the .cfg.  You can also add an XML to a plane for effects like on the FSX F-18.   ;)

Well, I can't seem to download any files from SimV anymore ( :-?) so I can't see what you linked to.

If for FSX, there's a tool in the menubar under FSTools called AttachPointTool that allows you to attach any effect in the Effects folder to a selected object. If you wanted to have smoke come out of a chimney, you would create a small box sitting at the top of the chimney, then you would use the attach tool to attach the chimney smoke effect to it.

I've used the effects SDK forest fire example and placed a few effects in the scenery by substituting the "fire" part with other effects.  The only thing that I had to alter was the altitude, which I think is in meters, above ground level, and, as per the location, the lat and long.  It's not part of the model, but it works.
