It would still help to know which sim you're using, FS2004 or FSX?
Many of the scenery design programs and tutorials apply specifically to one or the other.

For scenery object placement---Like ADE, SBuilder allows object placement on the 2d workspace. If you do a lot of object placement the Flight1-Instant Scenery payware program is excellent.
