Desert View International Airport

Postby Capt.Propwash » Mon May 04, 2009 10:30 pm

here is where i will be cataloging my efforts in constructing a new airport; the Desert View International Airport !!!

right now it is only a WIP (work in progress) and some of the things that I have done so far may NOT stay the same.

Well, I now have apron lighting around the entire airfield, ILS feathers with frequencies, 4 start locations, all Taxiways labeled (A - M), and a Tower ViewPoint.

It is pretty much ready to fly as is, but it is still an empty airfield with NO BUILDINGS as of yet.  There will be a few on the Field, and maybe if someone would be so kind to help me out with some flight plans to/from the field it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if anyone is looking to Model a "Main terminal building" I would be your best friend for LIFE!!

again, I am sorry if the picture is too dark, I am trying to show the night lighting at the airport.  Before all is said and done for the airport, I will also have Light Poles up that will hopefully put out light on the airport grounds so you can see at night.

I have some custom buildings but they are military style hangars not terminal buildings, don't know that might be appropriate for this. Good airport lights can be found here:

in all actuallity, the 2 runways that you see right now and the LARGE concrete rectangle, are primarily for Military use, but GA/civil can use the runways.  the 2 smaller squares Left = Civil Airliners / Right = GA & Helicopters.

so if you have some Military style buildings, I might be able to find 'something' that will fit the style.

Civil Terminal Building:: i have no clue how to use G-max or any other SDK like that (have tried, and failed miserably), but if anyone can/would build just a simple rectangle style building with a few windows (just something to look at when you pull up to the gate -- does not have to be anything fancy or even have night lighting except on the outside surface of the building) it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Wondering if this is a custom/fictional airport, that makes some difference as to what ought to be added or otherwise (I haven't seen anything like it so am presuming this is the case). Probably the easiest way to show what I have available is to check out my own fictitious military base,

FS9 version -> http://www.simviation.com/simviation/do ... hp?ID=4413
FSX version -> http://www.simviation.com/simviation/do ... hp?ID=4414

All buildings in that scenery are my own custom objects (save for the tank farm). If there's anything there that may be of interest, please let me know & I'll create library object versions that can be placed easily on any other airport. The smallest hangar will easily accommodate a DC-10. No buildings feature animated doors though.

If you don't have Instant Scenery then I could place the items for you, provided a map or layout was provided. Instant Scenery also allows adding default buildings such as terminal buildings, so there's that option available as well.

Good luck with your project!

you are correct in assuming that it is Custom / FAKE.   im just trying to get my feet wet in building new airports, as i am thinking if this turns out good, then i might do something a little better.... say build an island in the middle of the ATLANTIC or Pacific oceans so that travel weary pilots can land and get fuel for their long hauls across the water.

1 idea for my island is,   how far is it from Hawaii to JAPAN (straight line), or the closest islands to get gas???? well.... If i can build an island 1/2 way between then pilots can get more fuel easily.   ----- or, how far is it from Florida to Africa in a straight line??? Same idea, get gas 1/2 way through the ocean and then continue on.

Civil airlines do have not have a midair refuel option, so put a gas pump somewhere that might get used.

In the Pacific, there are plenty of islands, but no really detailed ones that you can land and get fuel at.  One of my favorite locations (where I also started to build a fictional airport) is PLPA, Palmyra Island.  It was an old military base during the second world war, but is unused today.  In fact, the entire island is a sanctuary, but it has a large open space and enough room for (as far as I can recall) a 10,000 ft runway.  If you just erase the current runway you'll have a nice blank square of area to work with.

looks like you've got plenty of ramp space there.

why not put up some hangers for the military aircraft?

Looks good, but is the large rectangle a very wide unfinished runway or is it area for buildings and that kind of thing?

you are referring to the area that is labeled DESERT VIEW AFB??? that is the Tarmac / ramp for the base.  in the next few weeks (being that i am only working on it a tiny bit at a time) it will become populated with buildings, static C-17's, F-16's, F-18's, F-14's, AI Craft... it will look totally different.

Military runways = 9L / 27R (long) = 9500 x 300 Feet
                          9R / 27L ( STOL ) 3500 x 200 Feet

STOL rwy will eventually get Arrestor Cables for those that want to practice their Trapping!!!!!

oh yeah... 1 other thing that i forgot to mention in my list of things..... 4 fuel stations.  1 @ each end of the military base, 1 in Civil area, and 1 in GA area..... off to the side where you see the Proposed NEW rwy... there is going to be a FUEL FARM with Containers and way off to the North (right side of the pic - but out of view) there will be a "refinery".  8-)
