Creating a New Airport

Postby Ravang » Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:18 pm

I want to create an airport in FSX that isn't there, so I was wondering what freeware airport editor I should use to, clear the autogen out of the area, place taxiways and runways. I wouldn't need it to place buildings and such as I'll use Instant Scenery for that bit.

...well not being an FSX user I can only speak from what I hear or read, but Airport Design Editor would be the main engine for the basics of your new airport..

" It takes it's inspiration from the excellent AFCAD2 developed for FS9 by Lee Swordy.  ADE does for FSX what AFCAD does for FS9 and adds support for new FSX features such as fences and jetways."

You will need a Flatten program to ..well..flatten areas for your new airport and also an Exclude program to ..yes....exclude all those unwanted trees and buildings etc......in FS9 I use Flatten.bgl and Exclude.bgl. Not sure if they work with FSX but sure to be similar utilities for FSX..........

Other bits and pieces will have to be installed on your PC to make all these things work properly together but all that will no doubt be explained in the Help files which come with the various downloads........

Try here  http://www.scenery.org/graphical_editors.htm for the download...the basic version is 1.0 but there is an update link built in to it which you can access after installing........( think)

READ the instructions BEFORE installing eh!

...best I can offer but best of luck with it all...........commoner ;)

A good place to look for alot of airport and scenery design answers is
over at fsdeveloper.com/forum/

Tools....I use Airport Design Editor and FSX Planner to modufy my
stock airport "afcads". I use Whisplacer to add scenery objects to
airports.
I use SbuilderX and FSX_KML to create exclusions, modify landclass,
change airport backgrounds (landclass) and flatten areas.
The those two programs will allow you to get rid of the autogen
trees in FSX.

All of the above are free.

Just a note that everything mentioned above requires that you have the FSX-SDK installed.

If, like me, you have FSX Standard (no SDK) then the payware, Flight 1's AFX, is the only option I know of. I use it and like it. It's very easy to learn/use, particularly you've ever used AFCAD. Nice companion to Instant Scenery.

Like Instant Scenery, there is a demo available that's full function within 50mi of Seattle.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

I probably will use that as I don't have the SDK, and it lets you see what it looks like in FS in real-time.

If you plan on primarily creating new airports, you might want to experiment using the Demo first.

I haven't created any airports from scratch, so don't know what method you would use to 'flatten'. (Though I believe that FSX still honors a 'flatten switch' in the Scenery.cfg file, maybe someone else can advise on that.)

One of the potential problems with creating new airports in FSX is that, as far as I know, there are no terrain tools that can work without the SDK.
