adding a gps gauge

Postby FsNovice » Sun Sep 30, 2007 1:41 pm

I am embarking on a uk wide tour of the coast in the lake renegade (expect shots soon) but i have hit a glitch. It has no access to a gps gauge. I was wondering how easy it is to add one to the plane i already have. I need the gps thingy to see my FP inflight for Nav purposes. Cheers

It's quite easy to add a GPS gauge to any aircraft that will appear in a 2D window.

Not knowing which aircraft you are interested in installing the GPS gauge in, all I can do
is give you general information.

First, take a look at a default FSX aircraft  ( this is for FSX is it not? ), say the Beach Baron 58.
Open the "panel" folder ( not the panel.G1000 ) and then the panel.cfg file.

Note the first set of entries under "Window Titles"...the Window02 entry specifies that a following
"Window02" section will define a window named "GPS".

In your aircraft, you could add this entry after the LAST "Windowxx" statement. Give it
the next number after "XX".

Next, look down to the section titled "Window02" in the baron 58 panel.cfg.

Simply copy & paste this section into your aircrafts panel.cfg file after the LAST "Windowxx"
section and BEFORE any "Vcockpit00" or "Vcockpit01" sections.

Rename the section you pasted in to conform to the last window number +1, which should
be the same as the number you used in the "Window Titles"  section.

( Note: for a "Windowxx"  where xx=09 or less, see the last line here )

Finally, to add an icon for calling up the GPS window you need to add a line in
the first ( main ) 2D window section after the last "gaugexx=" line.  If, say, the
last gauge number called out was "gauge30="....you would add this line:

gauge31=SimIcons1024!GPS Icon,      X, Y, x, y

where X, Y, x, y are :
horizontal position in the main 2D panel window
vertical position in the window
horizontal size of the icon ( try a value of 20 or 30 first )
vertical size of the icon ( again, 20-30 to start )

You will have to experiment to find the correct X,Y values to place the icon
where you want it on the panel.

That's all there is to it for the 2D solution. The only difference for a VC solution
would involve the Icon. many VC's will not allow you to add gauges, which the
Icon is, to a VC. I ofthen squeeze a new icon into the space used by existing
VC icons ( if any ) by shrinking one or more of them to make roon for an extra
icon.

If, however, your new window has a number less than "Window10", then it can simply be
called up with a keystroke ( Shift+x ) where "x" is the window number assigned.
In this case you do not need to bother with an Icon.

i am doing this for Fs2004, not sure how the assumption of fsx crept in.  :-/ :-/

No problem....I have put FS9 on the "shelf" since going to FSx but in any case, the
procedure is the same for FS9. The instructions I posted will work just fine using the
FS9 Beach Baron 58 file as a guide :)

It's always a good idea when asking questions to specify which SIM it relates to
and which aircraft, where applicable...this allows anyone responding to give a
better, more detailed\complete answer :)

Change the last line to:
gauge25=fs9gps!gps_500, 0,0, 150, 250

That should put the gauge in the upper left corner to start, but it will ALWAYS be
present in the display, which is probably not what you want.
Instead, remove that statement and just use the Window callup using Shift+2.
( that's hlding the shift keep and htiing the "2" key...that should toggle the GPS window
just as hitting "Shift+1" toggles the radio window.

[Window02]
size_mm=150,250
position=8
BACKGROUND_COLOR=16,16,16
VISIBLE=1
ident=GPS_PANEL

gauge00=gps!gps,0,0,150,250

Again, I think this line wants to be:

gauge0=fs9gps!gps_500, 0, 0, 150, 250

Also, "VISIBLE=0" instead of "1" will let you toggle the window and
it won't automatically be present at the start.

SNIP

Sorry its so long, but i felt it would be more productive to post it all. Cheers

No problem. I THINK the main problem is the "gps!gps" callout as oposed
to "fs9gps!gps_500"...this is the GPS  gauge used in the default Baron 58.

I seem to recall way in the past having some problem with the callout
for "gps!gps"....

Anyhow, give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Paul

EDIT: Hummm....I just downloaded what LOOKS to be the same panel CFG you are working with
and the download already had a GPS window included as well as a GPS icon on the panel.
It calls out the fs9gps!gps_500" gauge as well.
Had you previously modified this panel?  If so, you might want to download the panel
again. Just search on "Renegade" in the library.

The gauge name is wrong if your calling the default gps gauge. Should be: gauge25=fs9gps!gps_500,0,0,150,250
At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

There is an FS2004 Lake Renegade update posted here --> http://www.simviation.com/fs2004props148.htm
A replacement Panel.cfg is included complete with a GPS pop-up window toggled from the GPS icon on the main panel. It's only a small file & should fix the problem.

PS. I suspect this is the file Paul is talking about.
