AFCAD?

Postby rootbeer » Fri Sep 08, 2006 12:38 am

So what is AFCAD? I see it referenced when it comes to add-on airports that people have designed. I'd like to design one that I can actually hit with a big jet. It would be two  runways, each 300 feet wide, have 200-foot aprons on either side and be 18,000 feet long. I have the land where I live...

Hi rootbeer

AFCAD is a freeware package by Lee Swordy that allows use to very easily manipulate FS default scenery so we can make it look like the real thing or in fact create something new.

AFCAD can add/change runways, taxiways, aprons, parking for AI, TWR position, Navaids blah blah.  You can download it at here at SimV, so get it have a look and read the docs.  It does not do 3d models, Flattens, excludes and ground ploys.

Have Fun, Brittair

So you're saying I can create a flat runway, but can't design things like towers and buildings? What is it that I see on some land around some runways in FS that makes it look like a whole lot of earth was moved to make the runway level on undulating terrain? Will AFCAD do this?

Just like in the real world, before you use AFCAD to layout your new airport you will likely have to 'bulldoze' the area to level it and remove stuff.

Here are a couple of previous topics that discuss the process.

Afcad is a must have program for anyone who is serious about FS. If you plan on adding AI than you will need it to make sure the airports of the AI traffic have parking spaces. If there is no place to park the plane will fly around in circles for a while than just vanish into no mans land. 8)

Gary,

You mean to say that if I don't include a tarmac area to actually park the aircaft with parking brakes on and all, the airplane can't be landed? It will just fly around in simcircles, burning up simfuel until it vanishes into the simether? What makes it go off into the simsunset all by itself without me actually flying it there? Check out the strip at Marble Canyon, AZ (AZ03) or the one at L41 just south, along the cliffs (I've actually seen those cliffs for real-- they are awesome). There's no parking area at L41, just a semi-transparent strip on the ground. Does AFCAD give you the semi-transparent terrain features?

I must include that I have FSGenesis' Rocky Mountain and West Coast terrains. If you have something different, you may not see it as I do...

For an airport to be AI capable, it must have the necessary componants such as parking spots and taxiways to them, etc. The easiest way to tell if a default airport can use AI is to open it up in AFCAD. AFCAD creates a parellel file to the default and overides it. This way if you don't want the changes you made you can simply remove the file and the default will work again. Try it sometime, it's easy to use. The help file is very easy to understand.
P.S. Another nice feature is the fault finder. If there is a problem with the airport settup, it zooms to the location and points to the problem and tells you how to fix it. ;)

Absolutely no one has heard a peep from Lee for the past two years.  For all anyone knows, he may well be... gone!  :-/
