How would I do this?

Postby JBaymore » Sat Aug 07, 2004 12:22 pm

Being an avid skier..... it drives me nuts flying over some of my favorite mountainous areas where I have often skied.... and not seeing the ski areas.  It is frustrating flying in the Slat Lake CIty area and going "low and slow" up Little Cottonwood Canyon and not seeing Snowbird and (my all time favorite) Alta.  Or here in NH not seeing places like Wildcat and Waterville.... or VT not having Stratton and Bromley (my hangout) or Killington.

SO..... that leads me to a possible "pet project".  I am wondering if it would be possible to easily install at LEAST a "photoreal" image (if I can find them) of the trail networks and such onto the existing terrain mesh?

My guess is that I would need four "textures" for these.....summer, fall, winter, and spring.  How hard is it to do this kind of thing?

Then the next step in the whole idea would be to create some "generic" lift towers and lodging buildings in GMax... and create a scenery file to place them in the appropriate locations.  Of coursde the lift towers would be a bit problematic...cause the lift profiles of each lift would differ...and require differing tower heights..... but ......  ;)

SO...... in general ...how would I accomplish "Step one"?

Appreciate any suggestions.

best,

I recently download a program from avsim that will allow you to make terrain mesh files with. I have yet to put it to use.
 It is called FSDEM
This might be a good place to start
The hard part is finding the input files of the area you want & hope you can get the desired look needed for the mesh.
I am in the process of looking for files for my region in Jacskonville Florida. I hope to make a mesh for my area but I am not sure if it will do what I want. 8)

Gary,

Thanks for the suggestion.... but I think that program does mesh.  The mesh is already there.  What I need to be able to do is apply a new "surface" texture (the "picture" of the ski area trails) to a specific terrain mesh location exactly where the ski area is located.

Does that program allow that kind of control too?
