A Question about transparent textures (windows)

Postby Jaypee Dippel » Thu Feb 04, 2010 4:33 pm

I have Paul Clawson's Republic XR-12 for FS2004. This model does not feature an exterior cockpit. It does have clear cockpit windows, you can peer right into the emtpy fuselage. I have tried several times to re-color the window texture to give it a dark tint as to not make the missing cockpit so noticable. I keep getting a solid color for the windows.
Can anyone help me do this correctly? I'm using DXTbmp and Paint Shop Pro X2

HI, Me again
A week has gone by and no replys.                                     Can any of you hot shot painters give me advise on tinting windows? When I try to experiment with the main image or the alpha channel I get Opaque windows. This bitmap shares the aircraft nose and the cockpit windows. The aircraft is the Republic XR-12 for FS9 by Paul Clawson.
I want to darken the tint in the cockpit windows to hide the Cavity where the cockpit interior should be. It is otherwise a good looking plane.
Any tips would be greatly apreciated   JP

Hi,

I dont think your problem is with the textures. Transparency is controlled in the model itself, and is set in the modelling program before exporting to a .mdl file. The areas where the windows are  is cut out, and a window is drawn in on the modelling program with transparency properties.
So I dont think you can adjust your textures to make your windows transparent.
I hope this answers your question?

Enjoy!

[color=#000000]I could be wrong, as I have not tried to do it myself, but you might be able to darken or change the color of the texture and then modify the alpha channel slightly to get the effect you want. Let us know if it works.
Cheers.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

Thanks for your replys. Jake14, as I've said these windows are already transparent. I just want to darken the tint of windows without them going opaque. I was hoping someone would download this aircraft and take a look at it. Also I was just trying to paste a screenshot onto this post but that doesnt work. How do add an image to your posts?

O.K. I'm getting somewhere on these tinted windows, I think Patchz was on to something. The answer is in the alpha channel. I've created a new alpha image silhouletting the main image. The sheet metal areas remain white, the window areas I darkened to a medium grey, then I darkened the windows on the main image with a touch of blue/green. It looks pretty darn good I must say. I'd still like to learn how to upload images on posts. then I could show you my results. thanks JP :)
