We registered FSRepaint users find it good for viewing and repainting FS9 aircraft. It's not the best way to repaint planes but it is an excellent viewer for checking repaint modifications as one proceeds thru the repainting process.

Free alternatives are:
1.) DXTbmp
2.) Paintprog (Pixia; PSP, etc.)
3.) FS9
Usage:
1.) Identify, convert to Extended format and view individual texture files
2.) Repaint, saving to 24 or 32bit BMP format
3.) View results

I see no reason why you couldn't use the Demo version of FS Repaint to view the textures. This could be very useful.

I use DXTbmp which is working out fine for me. I have also discovered that leaving FS9 running in the background on the aircraft selection promp - allows you to activly see your repaint coming along on the AC itself

That's what I did for a long time, until I finally gave in and registered FS Repaint.  Then I realised how much easier it made things!  ;D
