DTXBmp help

Postby CAFedm » Wed Jan 12, 2005 9:40 pm

In trying to compress texture files, I've loaded 32-bit .bmp images into DTXBmp Texture Manipulator, and initially saved these as DXT1 files.  The gray-blue aircraft paint scheme turned chrome silver, and the clear textures were opaque.  I then re-loaded the original 32-bit images and saved them as DXT3, the same thing happens.  Is there a step that I might be missing here, have read instructions within DTXBmp and it is suggested to use either DXT1 or 3 for FS2002 (which is what is being run here).

The easiest thing would be to leave them as 32Bit  ;) OK, so  the files are larger, but they will be full quality as they havn't been compressed. (and will work with FS02)

Im surprised some textures are going transparent, and some reflective with DXT3. I would have expected all reflective, or all transparent.

If you want to use dxt3 then make sure you have a pure white alpha layer, that should avoid any transparency or chrome effect - easiest way in dxtbmp is to go to the Alpha menu, and click Make Alpha Channel (Green) - but make sure none of the colours on your bitmaps are pure green.

Hope this helps, give me a shout if you need any more help.

Your suggestion about the green alpha worked very well - have now got the textures worked out, proper reflections and all.

No worries, what aircraft is it you're repainting?

It's a pet project (own creation), not a repaint of an existing one, so am learning everything from how to assemble the plane, to animation, to how to paint it all in one go - has been quite a ride!  Here's a pic of progress thus far -

Cheers - Brian
