Then it would paint the blank space outside of the model's texture.  8)
I doesnt tend to affect the plane in any way, shape or form.
But i personally prefer to keep it neat incase anyone wants to edit my textures.  ;D

Nothing would happen... So if you want to paint the whole bitmap the same colour as the fuselage (For example) it wouldn't make a difference to how the textures show up in the sim :)
