Airspeed Indicator puzzle

Postby Sir Puma » Mon Dec 14, 2009 12:33 pm

I'm playing with a Mooney Bravo. I DL one that was supposed to be the Ascension model (supercharged and faster). The original ASI doesn't go high enough for the actual speeds so I changed out to another ASI. While the indicator goes high enough, the reading isn't right. When the aircraft is going 200 the ASI indicates 240.

Is this something that is controlled by the CFG or the MDL files? :-?

At first glance.. I'm going to guess that the ASI is calibrated in MPH, instead of knots..

The rough ratio is 1:1.15.. but that doesn't work out exactly  (200 X 1.15 = 230).

The extra 10mph could be that your realism settings are for true airspeed, instead of indicated airspeed. Make sure it's set to indicated

I am set to indicated airspeed. :-?

The needle on the indicator is in the same place that it would be on the previous indicator, it's just that the numbers aren't in the same positions. Though When it said 200 on the other ASI the airspeed (when looked at with ctrl+z) would be at 224. Now, when the ASI says 200 the actual is around 155. If I were to overlay the two indicators, the needle would be in the same position, but the indicated airspeed would be different. The needle seems to stay steady with the actual airspeed, though. I just want to make the needle not move as much.

I'm not sure I'm making sense. :-/

With the new indicator when the ASI is at 60 kts, ctrl+z is at 55. When the ASI is at 100, the other is at 90. When the ASI is at 240 the other is at 200.

I'll get some screen shots here in a bit to better demonstrate what I mean.

Which ASI gauge are you using? Are you sure it's not calibrated in mph?

Well, the original is the standard Mooney_Bravo ASI from FS2004 CoF. The new one is pa23_airspeed which I pulled from an Aztec pack that I DL. It says Knots on the face of it, LOL, for what that's worth.

I take back what I said about the needle being in the same place. :P They are in different angles for the same indicated speeds.

I would try another gauge & see what happens.

Well, I went back to the Mooney_Bravo gauge and it was close to accurate. Then I looked again at the PA23 and it looked like it said KPH or MPH under the needle pivot point, can't tell because the needle is there. I'll see if I can find a better one.

Basically I need one that indicates Kts and redlines at around 240-250 but indicates to about 275 :-[

I imagine it says MPH. KPH would be Kilometres per hour. If it was in Knots it would simply be marked KNOTS. 1 Knot = 1 Nautical MPH

Yeah, I was finally able to see the gauge without the needle in FSEdit and it says MPH, so that makes sense.

So either I find one for knots or use this one, though the redline is off. Research on the Bravo TN (which this appears to be based on) says cruise speed is 237kts (272 mph). The PA23 redlines at 240 mph.

Is there a category for gauges to DL? ;)  N/M Found it. ;D

Not sure I can help there. Isn't there a suitable default gauge?

There's a small Gauges section here at SimV. Not sure they're all compatible with FS9. I think this is the latest page. http://www.simviation.com/simviation/index.php?type=item&ID=146&page=2

I found it, but no ASIs.

Well, I found a gauge that will do. Now if I could just figure out how to get it to show in the virtual cockpit. :D ::)

I think I have about as much fun getting these things to work as I do flying them. ;D
