afx to FSC file conversion project

Postby Felix/FFDS » Mon Jul 04, 2005 10:49 pm

At Freeflight Design Shop, we're carrying a library of afx source files, originally made with BAO's Flight Shop and Abacus' Aircraft Factory 99.  Unfortunately, both titles are out of print.

These older source files are usually low -LOW - polygon models, and some of the later ones have separate control surfaces.  I find their value more as references (in some cases) and some can be used as LOD models.

I've used some of these as "seed" models.  Even though I have a backdrop image, I'll "build over" the old afx part and get a good idea on where to place a part or such.

So we at FFDS have started converting the old models to the FSDS1 format, which can be opened directly in FSDS2, and by using the stand alone CVA conversion utility, the fsc can be converted to dxf,  and in turn imported direcetly into gmax.

These conversions, however, don't come without a "catch".  the axis of all converted parts are at 0,0,0.

For FSDS users, watch out that the resulting project's "scale factor" may pop up as "0", in which case a snap to scale effectvely makes all your points disappear!

As of tonight (July 4, 2005), the "Civilian" and "Business" File Sections have been converted.

Of course, no changes have been made to the existing FSDS and gmax models in those sections.

Enjoy!
