Have you tried making a seperate guage file just for reflection effects; added versions - i.e. different names - might then be applied over different guages (the actual guage needs to be listed 1st in the 'panel.cfg' so as to see through the "glass" guage). I haven't tried & I'm still too involved with texturing models for WW1 campaigns, though I'm near completion of the 1st part of that project.
Also, I saw a guage editing program, somewhere in the utilities section, to edit the bmp files therein, not that I mean to sidetrack what you're doing (I frequently do it to myself, however).

what about instead of adding the reflections into the gauges, placing a transparent polygon on top of them and adding the reflection to that polygon?

that's how i would do it, it's simpler than adding aplha channels to your gauge files

just an idea

I was meaning a seperate, single file that could be positioned over any other, actual guage. More than one could be made if you wished to alter shadow/reflective qualities according to the panel position, account for  needle movement, etc. Depends upon how simple/realistic you wish to be, like everything else. We may be saying a similar thing differently, Moach.
