I can only select the top verticies ob my object

For some reason when I select verticies from the top view, it seems to only select the top half of my symetric objects verticies. In fact even after I move the top half over to try and select the remaining bottom verticies, I can't select them, I have to go to another view. It isn't the "selection lock toggle" I checked that, somethign strange is happening. This makes it hard to select verticies, because the top view is easy to select all the verticies I want...  If I use the other view I end up selecting verticies from another object, and it is just a mess.

The only other possibility is the Ignore Back Face is selected.
