Change speed of plane?????

Postby jojoma12345 » Thu Jun 17, 2004 8:01 pm

I am trying to change the max and cruising speed of a lancair 300.  I am trying to increase it. but dont know how to.  I thought I would go to the aircraft.cfg file but that's not working. any advice would be great.

Hi,

In the misc. section of the dp file there are entres for speed.  These only affect the Min./Max values for the Mission  Builder. Otherwise you would edit the .air file and if you want to increase top speed (well their is a lot of data that affect speed) but you could just give it a bigger motor.

Hope this helps.

If you just increase engine power, you will get an 'overspeed' warning and the sim will grind to a sudden halt. You need to edit the AIR file using something like AirED (available here). Change the entry in line 316 (Mmo - maximum mach speed) and Vmo (speed in knots) in the Misc section of line 1101 - Primary aerodynamics, to what you want.

THEN you can increase engine power!

Don't forget to back up the file you're going to change first - in case you make an error ...

I increased the engine thrust on a jet I like and discovered several more things that also need changing.

The brakes need to be beefed up because low end thrust of the new engines makes the plane taxi a lot faster even with the engines at idle and the parking brake doesn't hold the plane very well.  You don't want to run into the building in front of you before you're ready to taxi.

The coefficient of friction should be reduced or you use a lot more fuel and it just plain takes longer to get to those higher speeds.

And if you reduce the friction of the plane you'll probably need bigger spoilers and flaps to slow down for landing.

I ought to fly higher to get better fuel economy but the engines start to get oxygen starved.  So that needs work.

Other than all that it's still a nice plane to fly.
