Need help editing an aircraft CFG

Postby A/SGT.Mav316 » Wed Mar 03, 2004 11:30 pm

The positions of the lights are the problem.

This is an example of an CFg's light system

[LIGHTS]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit
light.0=3, 8.50, -4.66, -2.496,

light.0=3, 8.50, -4.66, -2.496,  fx_navred...

Distance Forward(+) or Aft (-) of Reference
Distance Right (+) or Left(-) of Reference
Distance Above (+) or Below(-) Reference

Does that help? :)

The order is as follows:

front to back (Y axis) positive forward of and negative in back of the reference datum, side to side (X axis), negative is left and positive is right of the reference datum and up and down (Z axis) positive above and negative below the reference datum.

So 8.50 for the first figure places the light 8.50 feet forward of the reference datum.

-4.66 is 4.66 feet to the left of the reference datum.

-2.496 is 2.496 feet below the reference datum.

Thank you Silverfox and Lou,

This does definately help me out. Later tonight when I come back from work I will get to work on this helicopters light system! That was just the type of translation I needed. The clarifying from lou just saved me some more time from trial and error figuring out which way the numbers value made the light move.

Sincerely,

Mav (Sammy) 316

Thanks for the tutorial guys! It worked perfectly. The lights are now in their correct positions!

There are these rotating beacon lights that casts a red rotating light under the aircraft found on a United airlines aircraft and I was wondering if it was possible to copy the light cfg line into this helicopter to give it that effect for under its belly! Just to dramatise it! Lol

Absolutely!  In fact, if you go into the "Effects" folder of your FS and look at the names of all the *.fx files, you can put ANY of them in the light section and have them be activated by the lights system.  You could have a waterfall start off the aircraft when the lights turn on! :D

what program should you use to open the effects folders files to veiw what they are. I don't want to use a program to read the file and get some hyroglifik stuff that winds up messing up the simulator.

All FX files can be opened using Notepad, just like the *.cfg files.  But opening them won't always tell you what they do.  To find out exactly, just set up an effect at the end of the effects section in the aircraft.cfg and make it something like ten feet off on all three axes.  That way, you can see it even if it doesn't show up very well.  Now just start adding in the names of each FX file you see in there.

Thanks again Ender Baron

So actually this is another trial and error until I find the effect that makes the rotating beacon light! Oh boy looks like I got a lot of work cut for me here! But to get the effect will be a nice touch!

Here is a pic of the lights situated where they needed to be! The strobe flash is right on the strobe bulb and the nav lights are on the weapon wings where the lens for them are located. Thanks for all your help guys, I am learning alot from you!

It doesn't need to be totally trial and error: go into the United plane's .cfg file, and find the names of the FX fles used in the [lights] section. Then you should get it pretty quick.

I tried doing that, but was unsucessful in finding the line that caused the rotating light under the plane. I think it will be trial and error to find this FX file. What I think I will need to do is edit the United Airlines CFG Deleting one line out of the lights section (and paste it back) until I find the FX file that does that!

Another thing I noticed is that the United Airlines has the nav lights listed twice for the same position why did do that?

I tried all of that microlight it didn't work. It seems that the rotating red light is part of the main landing light effect.

I notice when you shut off the main landing lights in the 737-522 the rotating light turns off. Then when you turn them on again, the main lights turn on then the rotating light turns on. That to me is an indication that their is another effect file attached to the main landing light.

Problem is I don't know where to look for the main landing light effect (as it is not listed in the lights section of the Aircraft CFG). Can you or someoneelse point me in the right direction to locate this file within the CFG or the effects folder itself?
