Propellor reverse thrust Radial engines

Hi all,

I hope i'm on the correct forum for this,but here goes;...

As most available a/c are capable of reverse thrust,ie Jet and Prop jet,i haven't come across any radial engined a/c with it.

I have lodged this request on an other site ,but i'm not getting any positive feedback,only that in real life they don't have it! Very negative,as i know that they do!

Is there a way or a program available to enable reverse thrust?

If so ,it would enable realism to Caribou,DC4,6,7 , Connie and Convair a/c to mention a few.

Well, I've never heard of a radial engine aircraft with reverse feathering, but I suppose if you want to do it, you should go into the aircraft.cfg file of the aircraft in question and find this entry under [propeller]:

prop_reverse_available=0

Change 0 to 1 and that should do it.

Sorry, but the "other" responses you received stating radial engines didn't have reverse thrust are correct.

You claim to KNOW they did but you offer no references, links or book titles to substantiate this.

Jet engines were around a long time before reverse thrust was incorporated. Turboprops started out with only "flat" pitch before reverse thrust was available.

Incorporating reverse thrust on radials and other pistons would have required substantial redesign just in the thrust bearings alone, not to mention engine mounts and airframe considerations.

So, contrary to your belief, even if you find a way to incorporate it on the FS aircraft you mention, it will only serve to detract from their realism.

I think it's a good idea to apply reverse thrust on a radial.

Many consider that as odd. But hey, I'm also odd since I am making cars for a flight sim world.

When I first started to use Gmax [my first ever 3D program], I imagined myself as the best aircraft modeler there is. HOWEVER, I ended up being the best CAR modeler there is in the FS community.

I guess there are so many aircraft designers that there is probably no more room for me in that department.

Pretty ironic and strange don't you think?

Thanks Ender Baron for your suggestion .It is much appreciated and hopefully it will work.

Will let you know if i'ts succesful!

For others that have replied...i would not have asked and included some of the types of a/c that DO have reverse thrust!

How do i know? 37 years in the airforce as an engineer/tutor in systems and engines/ worked on and flown them from Piper cub to F111 would be sufficient.
If that's not enough Email De Havilland re Caribous if you like.

Don't read the BOOKS... read the real  a/c MANUALS and yes i'm looking for reallism. You may also read the apology from a member from another post, who now has REALLY seen it with his OWN eyes!

Radial engines have had reverse thrust incorporated BEFORE the JET AGE started.


They don't, not even in real life.

  You are so right. I have seen a Caribou going backwards on the runway after landing.

In the .air file, table 1511 "turns on" Reversers and has the following 3 entries to set for a piston engine:
1 .Reversers=True
2. Idle blade angle=0.0
3. Reverse blade angle=-13.5

In the aircraft.cfg file, set in the Propeller Section, set these parameters as required:
prop_reverse_available=1
minimum_on_ground_beta=8.500
minimum_reverse_beta=-13.50

The B-36 makes sense...after all as a pusher it would normally use a set of reverse thrust bearings, reverse thrust would just use the normal set.

As for the Caribou going backward...it was probably a Buffalo.

The C-7A, as operated by the Air Force, is described as an unpressurized, high wing, Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) aircraft powered by two Pratt & Whitney R2000-7M2 radial engines. The powerplants were equipped with engine-driven single-speed superchargers and developed 1,450 BHP at 2,700 RPM under standard day conditions. The engines were fitted with three blade Hamilton-Standard full-feathering, reversible hydromatic propellers. The engines were also fitted with two exhaust augmentor tubes over the top surface of the wing behind each engine. These augmentor tubes, open at the front, served to draw cooling through the nacelle and actually added to the total thrust of the powerplant. The cargo compartment was unobstructed and 6 feet 3 inches high, by 6 feet 2 inches wide, by 28 feet 9 inches long. The cargo floor had two rows of rollers to facilitate handling of heavy, palletized cargo and would accommodate a standard 463L aluminum cargo pallet. The rear cargo door opened inward to leave an unobstructed opening for cargo airdrops. The Vietnam aircraft had their deicing systems and cabin heaters removed and had no crew oxygen system. This latter fact limited the maximum altitude to well under the capabilities of the aircraft.

you can reverse what you want, but FS doesnt support reverse on piston engines.
The way it works on the CalClassic DC-6/7 and the rest of their planes is a hack job
