How to make ailerons  on a wingin in Gmax

i have made a wing in gmax whit no trouble but now its time to put some animated aileron on it  :o

i have read some info about that on some forum  here what i get .

my question is (in line 5) where is geometry and compound objet in Gmax ???


1) Make a copy your wing keep it in the same place

2) Create a box that is no wider than the aileron but a bit higher and longer

3) Position it over the wing where you want the aileron

4) Select your cloned wing

5) In geometry->compound objects select boolean

6) set operand b to be a copy and click pick

7) select your box

8) now set the operation to intersection

9) now select your origional wing

10) goto boolean again and set operand b to move and select your box again

11) now set the operation to A-B

12) this leaves you with a wing that has a hole for the aileron and an object (with the name of your cloned wing) for your aileron.

13) you may need to create some new polys on each of the objects if they were edit meshes to fill in the blank faces
There is a 100pixle wide, and 10kb large, size limits on Avatars.

I have used this method before, but found that it creates unwanted vertices after the compounding.  What I suggest is lining up the edges of polygons with the edges of the ailerons and flaps when creating the wings.  This way, you can just select the polys and detach when you are ready to create the control surfaces.

Just to add to the excellent responses here, and to answer the question about additional faces created ....

Convert the wing and box to editable mesh; for each object in poly sub-object mode, select all and remove smoothing before your boolean operations.  This tends to reduce the damage typically done with smoothed objects and eases cleanup afterwards.

i think i enderstand now here i have rewrite the text tel me if im right  :D

Assuming you want to keep the part you remove and use it as the aileron this is how i do it.

1) Make a copy your wing keep it in the same place

3) Position it over the wing where you want the aileron

4) Select your cloned wing

5) Convert the wing and box to editable mesh

6) for each object in poly sub-object mode, select all and remove smoothing

7) In creat menue at the right panel change standart
primitive to compound objects and select boolean

8) set operand b to be a copy and click pick

9) select your box

10) now set the operation to intersection

11) now select your origional wing

12) goto boolean again and set operand b to move and select your box again

13) now set the operation to A-B

14) this leaves you with a wing that has a hole for the aileron and an object (with the name of your cloned wing) for your aileron.

15) you may need to create some new polys on each of the objects if they were edit meshes to fill in the blank f

my wing is made and hall aileron functionning greyt   :)
