My first Model

Postby EirePlane » Sat Nov 15, 2003 1:37 pm

I 've just had my first go at moddeling and have realised that i'm having a bit of trouble making the wings and stuff. Is anyone willing to help. It's a 737-500 in GMax. I've made the fuselage and tail. I just need someone to help with the wings , wheels and engines.

This is how I make my wings.

Make a cylinder object with enough height segments and sides. Then rotate it so that it's on its side.

From here, I would use the non-uniform scale tool to flatten and stretch the object as necessary.

From here on, you can tweak the cylinder so that it has the of the wing. It's also best to convert the object to an editable poly so that you can move the vertices independantly.

That's all I can say for now.

A good idea is to make the cross-section shape of the wing first (the airfoil shape) and then concentrate on overall shaping.  That way, the whole wing will retain the basic airfoil shape, keeping it uniform.  This will keep you from getting wrinkles.

For the engines, I would recomend starting with a tube object with about 20-32 sides and four or five height segments.  That will make it easier to get the shape you want with the polys.

The wheels are a whole nother mess altogether.  I suggest you jump over to www.freeflightdesign.com (see Felix? ;D) and check out the tutorials section.  They have many great ones, and its where I got all my experience with gWax.

Cut out the shape by making a spline in the same shape and then ShapeMerging it with the fueslage.  Then convert back to editable mesh.

Now go into subobject modification and select vertices.  Find "Weld" in the edit geometry section.  For "Target", set 1.  For "Selected" set 0.125".  Press "Selected".  This will keep you from getting an error message from MakeMDL later on.

Next, select "polygon" in subobject modification and make sure all the polys you cut are selected, then click on "Extude" in the edit geometry window.  This pulls the polys you select "out" of the object and creates new ones that connect the object to the polys you extruded.  Click and hold on the selected polys, while moving the cursor around.  When you get the polys to move into the object, let go.

Now right-click in the "bottom" view window.  Go find View Align, near the very bottom of the edit geometry section and click on it.  This will flatten the surface of the polys, relative to the view you currently have selected.

Voila.  You now have the beginnings of a wheelwell.  If you need more help, or this didn't make enough sense, just tell me.

Okay, here's how:

First off, I'm going to use a simple box and a simple spline shape (box) for this.

Ender - Nice explanation.  Even Inspector Poly can understand it.

I got really tired of trying to do intricate explanations of Gmax workings with words.  Pictures help SOOO much!

I'm thinking of doing a Gmax tutorial on building aircraft, but I don't know how I should do it.  Any suggestions?
